Katie McKenzie 2009 UT Martin Rodeo Queen By Nancy McKenzie Katie McKenzie was crowned The University of Tennessee at Martin's 2009 Rodeo Queen on March 14. She is a 16-year-old sophomore at Westview High School in Martin, TN. She is a competitive barrel racer and a member of Westview's three-time National Championship Cheerleading squad. Katie is an honor student and is involved in various other school activities. Katie began her competition with horses at age two by showing in lead-line classes, and then worked her way up through various show circuits and Junior Rodeo. While participating in Junior Rodeo, she competed in Barrel Racing, Pole Bending and Goat Tying. Some of Katie's accomplishments with her horses include winning the 2005 4-H Western Regional Jr. High Point award. Katie was the 2005 West Tennessee Quarter Horse Association's All Around 12 and Under Champion and Youth Reserve Reining Champion. Katie was the 2006 Tennessee National Barrel Horse Association district 7 Open 2D and Youth 1D Champion. She also won the 2006 Western Regional 4-H Speed Horse High Point Award. Katie was the 2007 Tennessee NBHA 2D Youth State Champion and finished 13th in barrel racing at the American Quarter Horse Youth Association's World Show. She returned in 2008 to finish in 11th place. She was also the Tennessee International Barrel Racing Association's 2D Youth State Champion. In addition to these accomplishments, Katie has also competed at the All American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, OH and has qualified numerous times for the Youth and Open NBHA World Shows. Katie attends all the performances, events and festivities of the UT Martin Rodeo and competes at the Territorial Queen's Review in May.
