Tenn. NBHA State Finals Pays Out Over $55,000 Cash And Prizes
The 2006 NBHA TN State finals received record breaking entries once again. With a total of $15,300 in added money, competitors were eager to show at the beautiful Tennessee Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro, TN. A total of $43,251 paid in cash and 12,000 in awards. Each division winner in all 3 classes received a Pro-rider saddle. Reserve champions received 5 Star Equine Pads, 3rd—monogrammed sheets from Drysdales, 4th—weaver monogrammed halters, and 5th received monogrammed chairs by Rainbow Tack. All directors received monogrammed brief cases from Drysdales.
Amy Martin and NORTH TO DALLAS, took home the Open 1-D Championship. In 2005 Amy was just short of winning the state title, winning a go and placing in the finals. This year she had a little tough luck in the first go, but came back to redeem herself in the second go and the finals.
Starting the weekend off with a blazing 15.676 in the open 1st go, Cary Quakenbush and his famed mount, VIEW THIS JET, set the arena on fire. Boo Mundy aboard DR. HAMONS turned in the fastest time in the second go.
The senior race was just as hot as the open. Charles Crider and his new mount, EASY DASHERS, ran the fastest time on Friday with a 15.669. He continued his winning streak all weekend and came out on top of the senior race to win the 1-D title.
Returning to recapture her youth title, Amber Jo Heathcott and JEANNIES DRIFTIN did just that. Winning the 1st go and opting out to run the second go was the right decision. Jeannie came back to the finals and ran a scorching 14.679 taking her back once again to the winners circle.
Shannon Roberts was the high money earner of the weekend. Riding 5 head and placing 6 times out of his runs, he earned a total of $2134.
The proclaimed new event, the Flag Race has become popular in the southern states. Several states have added this class to their NBHA state finals. TN began to hold a flag race 3 years ago in conjunction with their state finals and several other states, including, KY, IN, IL have joined in.
James Denton of Milan, TN aboard REGAL went home with title of TN Flag Race Champion. He won a total of $1006 and a Crumrine buckle.
The Kiddie and pony race were just as exciting as all the other classes. Katie Brown and SMOKE won the Pony 1-D and Austin Hill aboard HOWIE D won the Kiddie 1-D.
