“Chillaxing At the Beach” was the theme of the August 25-26, 2017 MegFord Schooling Show at the Show Place Arena in Memphis, TN. Exhibitors were encouraged to “show your summer enthusiasm and wear your best beach wear!” With the caveat, of course, “that they are appropriate to wear at the show and when riding. Remember your boots and hard hats, too.”
While the Show Place Arena is not the beach, Ann Ford and Meg could be glad they were not at their new home in Azle, Texas (near Fort Worth) over this weekend, as Hurricane Harvey made landfall on the Texas coast as a category 4 storm. But weather in Memphis was near ideal, with highs in the mid-eighties and lows around seventy, with partly cloudy skies.
Entries in the show were up from last year, too, as 93 riders took advantage of the great weather to get in some practice before the fall show season. Ann Ford says that folks like the fact that their shows are at the Show Place Arena and they are made really welcome at this facility.
The show continued with its three Classics – Jumper, Hunter, and Covered Ring Classics. There were 32 Classics entries in the indoor arena and 15 entries in the covered arena. The Classics offered $200 and large ribbons to the winners. Cristen Cleveland, riding Summer Town Blues, won the Jumper Classic Friday night over 10 other riders. She was also the Jumper Classic winner at the June show. Cristen trains with Meredith Tipton.
Another feature of the MegFord shows is the award for Best Child Rider. The Best Child Rider award went to Emmalee Lentile riding Teamwork. Emmalee won four firsts and a second in the Beginner W/T/C X-rails division, a first in the Beginner W/T/C Equitation on the Flat class, and a second in the Classic, covered ring.
Winner of the Classic – Covered Ring was Kayla Benson riding Trey Lawson’s Popart. Winner of the Classic – Main Arena was Riley Zinn riding Audrey Muscari’s Champlain Jane.
Abbey Vincent, riding Sunkist, won the Mini Medal 2’ division. Mary Crow, riding That’s My Girl, won the Mini Medal II 2’6.” Full results of the show are available at horseshowsonline.com.
Friday night’s hospitality, provided by BrerFox Farm in Fisherville, Tenn., was a summer beach picnic-style delight, with four kinds of delicious salads: ultimate chicken salad, savory potato salad, sumptuous tomato salad with garlic, and sweet broccoli salad with raisins. Dessert was season-appropriate strawberries with angel food cake. Yum, yum!
