From the Tennessee Environmental Council

Was your New Year's resolution to be more environmentally-friendly, reduce waste, and reduce your climate emissions? You can do all three through composting!

Join Tennessee Environmental Council’s “Come, Post Your Compost” and become a part of the statewide composting community, and even win prizes doing it!

Turn your kitchen scraps into healthier soils and help divert tons of food waste from going to landfills.

Why does composting matter?Food represents the single largest component in U.S. landfills, yet only 3% of it is composted.

Getting food to our tables requires at least 10% of the total U.S. energy budget; uses up to 50% of U.S. land space, and uses 80% of the freshwater consumed in the U.S.

Compare with the fact that up to 40% of the food in the U.S. goes uneaten, averaging about 20 lbs wasted per person every month. That’s an estimated $165 billion a year of food thrown out!

All this waste is in contrast to the fact that 1 in 8 Americans face food insecurity (according to an NRDC food waste report).

What can you put in your compost pile? Just about everything, except anything synthetic, diseased plants, meat, fish, and dairy products. Fine a complete list of both “brown” and “green” compostables at: https://www.tectn.org/uploads/1/1/9/8/119801148/what_to_compost_printable_flyer__3_.pdf
