Winterpast Farm: 2017 Reflections

The Winterpast Farm family has had its share of ups and downs this year – mysterious lamenesses/behavior issues, buckets of rain in April, letting go of longstanding dreams, foot surgery, passing of pets and even a death in my family. However, we also enjoyed beacons of light among the darkness. Fabulous weather during cross country schoolings and most shows, relocating to the lovely Massar Stables, new converts to the wonderful, fun sport of eventing,  and the addition of new members to the WPF team –both riders and horses.

Our riders have had many successes at competitions last year. We have traveled all over Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and even ventured to Texas.

Early in the year Sarah Beth Slaughter, on In The Spotlight, won the USEA Area III Jr. Novice Championship for 2016! As she qualified for the American Eventing Championships in the Jr. Novice division, we traveled to Tryon, NC on Labor Day weekend, and she came home with a 7th place out of 61 riders. This pair had made their official debut in the Jr. Training division in October and knocked it out of the park finishing in 2nd place.

Marie Vitullo took her lovely brown OTTB Night Owl and the rest of the Winterpast Farm crew to the Learn To Event show in Nashville, Tennessee. Marie won 2nd in Sr. Novice with the only double clear round in Show Jumping. Lauren Kloek and Anna Williams moved up to Beginner Novice winning 1st and 2nd respectively, and Jeannette Lippy won 1st place in the Sr. Starter division with a personal best score of 29.8. I was one proud coach!

I purchased a lovely Oldenburg mare in March to use for lessons. She has turned out to be everything I hoped she would be! Her name is simply Scarlett, but we call her The Fabulous Scarlett because she is. Lauren Kloek competed on her a couple of times this year in the Beginner Novice division and ended the season with 2nd place at the MTPC Horse Trials in October and 1st place at the Evie Tumlin Memorial Combined Test in Oxford, Mississippi in November. There are other riders enjoying Scarlett and will be competing her next year, too. She is one busy mare!

Anna Williams competed her new horse Without A Doubt in the Starter division, and came home with top ribbons every time. She moved up to the Beginner Novice division, finishing 3rd at the MTPC Horse Trials in October.

Jeannette Lippy, one of our adult team members, has discovered just how much fun it is to gallop across the field on her gelding C. F. Rogue. They have won ribbons along the way and finished 4th at their last horse trials in Texas.

A couple of beginners, Eliza Taylor and Ava Holifield, worked really hard this summer and reaped the rewards at the Evie Tumlin Memorial Combined Test in November. They both showed Anna’s pony Mocha Latte in dressage tests and won 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.  Eliza even brought home the Evie Tumlin High Point Dressage Award!

Sydney Doss and Hooked On You joined Winterpast just before the MTPC Horse Trials in October. They were slotted in 4th place, but had an unfortunate “drive by” at the jump right after the water jump.
