The longest continuously running horse trials in the nation just celebrated its 65th anniversary! The Middle Tennessee Pony Club (MTPC) Horse Trials 65th running was held October 7-8, 2017 at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tennessee. This year also marked the 65th anniversary of MTPC. All divisions were filled to capacity, and there was a Wait List for additional competitors.
Jon Wells was this year’s cross country course designer, and competitors at various levels commented on how well the cross country course rode. Wells has designed courses at the Foxhall Cup, Virginia Horse Trials, the Maui Jim Horse Trials, Windridge Horse Trials, Indiana Eventing Association Classic 3-Day and Horse Trials, Penny Oaks Horse Trials, the FENCE Horse Trials, and for the American Eventing Championships. Jon has years of experience as a course designer and builder, and has a reputation for providing a welcoming and educational experience for all riders.
Open Preliminary A winner was: Megan Moore on Mooney Maguire, finishing on just her dressage score of 26.4. In second and third place was Jacob Fletcher: second on Bacardi W (27.3) and third on Atlantic Comino (27.8). Fletcher was first after dressage on Bacardi W, but picked up 2 time penalties on cross country and 1 time penalty on stadium. His other horse, Atlantic Domino performed well, too, adding just one time penalty from stadium to his dressage score.
In Open Preliminary B, Emily Shirley on Fernhill Romeo won the division on a score of 41.4. Gracelyn Kephart on Carlie McClearin was second with a score of 45.2.
In Open Training A, Lauren Kolegraff was Cruisin’Around to first place with a score of 35.4. Only 0.3 point away in second place was Laura Smith on Little Vegas, securing the placement on just her dressage score (35.7).
In Open Training B, Leslie Garner on Cash Performer held the top spot from dressage through stadium, placing first with a score of 32.4, having picked up 4 jumping faults in stadium. Betsy French and Aberlour had a similar performance, holding second from dressage through stadium and picking up 4 penalty points on stadium to finish in second on a score of 35.1.
In Open Novice A, Melissa Schielein, on Regae, held first from dressage to stadium, where she picked up 4 penalty points, but finished first with a score of 31.0. Jesha Marcy-Quay and Albermarle held second placed through all three phases, finishing in second on just her dressage score (32.8). Megan Moore and Master Moretti finished third on just her dressage score (34.8).
In Open Novice B, Crosby Rudd-Trow and Barney placed first with a score of 31.8 (23.8 + 0 + 8). Claire Ramage and Fitzwilliam Darcy finished in second on just her dressage score of 35.0.
In Junior Novice A, Sela Ward and QT Pie were the winners, carrying their dressage score to the finish (30.8). Emma Smith on Two Kings Too, was first after dressage (28.5), but added four show jumping faults to finish second with a score of 32.5.
In Junior Novice B, Hannah Page won the division on WHF Wilhelmina with a score of 32.5, starting in first place after dressage 28.5 + 4 stadium faults. Cristen Cleveland rode Meredith Tipton’s Summertown Blues to second place on just her dressage score of 38.0.
Rachel Miles racked up first and second place in Beginner Novice A: first on Zane with just her dressage score (23.0) and second on Q, again on just her dressage score (27.0). Marisa Shulman and Checkmate followed likewise in third, with only their dressage score (27.5), just 0.5 point behind Miles.
In Beginner Novice A Debi Crowley was “Vantastic” for first on just her dressage score of 21.5. Elisabeth Chizek and Providence held their dressage score all the way through to finish second (33.3).
In Junior Beginner Novice A, Jilian Gregory rode Casanova to first place on just her dressage score of 32.0. Lauren Kloek and Cindy Marsh’s Scarlett were second, again on just her dressage score of 33.3.
In Junior Beginner Novice B, Ella Rowen and Jitterbug Dancer won the division on their dressage score (33.8). Breeana Robinette and Velvet Brown placed second on just their dressage score (38.0).
In the Junior Starter division, Amie Triplett and Meredith Tipton’s Road Less Traveled were first on just their dressage score (33.3). Sabrina Knight, on Grace Johnson’s Opington, were second on just their dressage score (39.8).
In the Open Starter, Elizabeth Zuelke, riding Andy Dufresne, were the winners with a score of 30.5. Margaret Collins and Race for Dough were second on just their dressage score of 32.8. Jeri Bechard and her Touch and Go placed third (46.5).
