Mid-South Dressage Academy (MDA) hosted the second USDF show of the 2017 season: Memphis in Springtime, May 6-7. The show is usually held on Mother’s day weekend, but because of other show conflicts, this show was moved up a weekend this year.
“Entries were slightly down at this show, probably due to other show conflicts, but we still had plenty of entries for the show to run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every day,” said show organizer Elizabeth Clifton. Entries came from Little Rock, Arkansas; Missouri; Oxford, Mississippi, and west Tennessee. “We had a nice bunch of riders,” Elizabeth said. Some people are calling these “boutique shows,” Elizabeth added. “And we had gorgeous weather!”
Judge for the show was Tami Batts, from North Carolina. “She is fantastic! We love her,” Elizabeth commented.
Speaking of boutique, the “Top Hats & Under That” dressage boutique at Mid-South Dressage Academy offers some of the latest fashion trends in dressage apparel. One of the latest trends is coats with changeable collars and buttons – some with bling on the buttons – and some bling on hairnet/ bun covers. Apparel is made of lighter fabrics – for cooling. And riders are paying particular interest to matching their coats with their horses, choosing the colors that look best with their horses’ coat colors.

Kim Gentry and Leonardo were the FEI Grand Prix 2017 winners with a score of 66.900%. In the USDF/FEI Freestyle, Grand Prix 2017, the pair scored a winning 66.550%.
Gentry and her other horse Frasier won the Prix St. Georges 2017 with 65.000% on Saturday and 63.947% on Sunday.
Alexandra Du Celliee Muller posted a 61.974% with Rumba to win the Intermediate I class. The pair scored a better 64.342% on Sunday to win again.
On Saturday, Caitlyn Massey and Zassafrass won the Jr/YR Dressage Seat Equitation with a stunning 80.000%. Mary-kaylin Linch was second on Blu Suede Shoes with 70.000%.
Pony Classes were well represented, too. Terry Timmons and C.D. Uptown Girl won the First Level Test 3 Pony, scoring 66.618% on Saturday and 62.353% on Sunday.
Caitlyn Massey and Zassafrass won the Second Level Text 3 Pony, scoring 70.366% on Saturday.
MDA’s rescue pony MDA Maximus was a star in his classes, too. He won Intro Walk-Trot Test C on Saturday, scoring 63.750% on Saturday and 62.250% on Sunday. He also made his Training Level debut at this show, scoring 61.739% in Training Test 1 on Saturday and 59.783% on Sunday to win both days. His rider Kinley Scott was so proud of him! As is Elizabeth Clifton: “He’s moving up in the dressage world.”
