The Southern Equine Expo was held at the Tennessee Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro, TN on the weekend of February 27-29, 2015. The Expo featured an incredible line up of clinicians, including Lynn Palm, Ken McNabb, Larry Whitesell, Adam Richardson, Josh Peebles, Nicole Aichele, Patrick King, Stephanie Lynn, and Robert Eversole.
A wide variety of horse-related subjects were covered in the many choices of clinics and lectures. Lynn Palm discussed the value of Dressage and how it can cross train horses into benefiting other riding disciplines. She presented western dressage topics throughout the weekend. Gaited horse trainer Larry Whitesell’s clinic, with riders on their own horses, focused on working to obtain a safer, better connection with your horse, which gives the horse a more natural gait. Adam Richardson demonstrated ground manners, and Josh Peebles explained and demonstrated how to deal with trailer loading issues.
“Trailmeister” Robert Eversole lectured on “Horse Camping 101.” Dr. Holly Spooner offered her professional knowledge for “Preparing Your Horse for the Upcoming Season,” in which she explained how horses are natural sprinters. But with the correct training and exercise, they can be built up to become an endurance athlete. Lynn Palm lectured on the mathematics aspect of riding in a dressage arena. She gave wonderful examples of how to gauge your arena size and utilize the letters to determine your patterns and circles.
The weekend featured a Colt Starting Challenge, similar to Road to the Horse, which was judged by Ken McNabb, Troy Powell, and Sam Powell. The competing trainers were Patrick King, Adam Richardson, and Josh Peebles. The winning trainer would take home over $4,000. These particular trainers were selected for this challenge because of their ability to communicate with and train young horses with safe and proven methods.
Another offering of the Southern Equine Expo featured a variety of types of horses in the Breed Demonstrations, in which the history and various known uses of the breed were explained. After the demonstrations, attendees could step outside and get “up close and personal” with the horses. Those attending an had the opportunity to ask the owners questions regarding the breed.
Local veterinarians were on hand, too. Tennessee Equine Hospital staff taught how to best handle your horse emergencies.
Wandering from clinic to clinic, or taking a break from the lectures, there were countless opportunities to gain knowledge from the various vendors as well as shopping opportunities.
