The 2015 Mid-South Quarter Horse Breeders (MSQHB) Futurity celebrated its 33rd year of showcasing the get from select Quarter Horse farms across Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Held October 24-25 at the Show Place Arena, Memphis, TN, the show attracted over 300 entries, with “AQHA classes up in entries this year,” said Penny Robertson, “and Ranch Riding is a growing event. Congress winners were here this year: Bobby and Karen Johnson, Champion in Jr. and Amateur Ranch Riding, and Reserve in Sr. Ranch Riding. Jenny Honey and Suddenlyoutoftheblue were NSBA Champion and Reserve Congress Champion in Amateur Ranch Riding. We had some great members with nice horses in the Pleasure classes and had some super nice horses in Ranch Riding. We had 25 entries in Novice Amateur Pleasure,” she added.
This year the MSQHB added a class for mare owners/breeders. A mare bred to any stallion (other than the MSQHB stallions) in the MS, AR, TN area could be nominated. There were 33 horses nominated. “The owners nominate their babies in October, then can show them when they turn two,” Penny explained. The pot was over $5,000 for this inaugural class. In addition to ribbons, MSQHB offered belt buckles and chairs to Champion and Reserve Champion winners. All of the chairs are sponsored and the names of the sponsors appear on the chairs, e.g, Ricky Hall WP Quarter Horses, James & Linda Neisler, and Jeff Honey Quarter Horses. Penny and Butch Robertson sponsored a chair, as did 16 total sponsors. Chairs are still available for sponsorships for next year’s show. In addition, the show gave away a saddle and head stall this year.
Judges on Saturday were Nancy Swarm, Florida, and Mary Luther, Michigan. Sunday’s judge was Amy Watkins, Ohio. The official show photographer was Pearson Photography of Pleasant Plains, AR. Show results were not available at press time.
The MSQHB Futurity was founded in 1982 to offer the services of select stallions and exhibition opportunities for the offspring of these stallions. MSQHB Futurity is the second largest equine event in the Shelby County area. The show offers a full AQHA program in addition to Futurity classes. For more information, visit their website:
