Cedar Wind Farm Equestrian Center in Oxford, MS continued its tradition of hosting a fall Dressage Show and Combined Test on September 19, 2015. The show was held in honor of the late Evie Tumlin, founder and head trainer of Cedar Wind Farm, who passed away June 22, 2015. (See MSHR, July 2015 In Memoriam). Evie was also the founder of Southern Run Pony Club, which has a chapter at Cedar Wind Farm.
At mid day, the show paused for a memorial service to honor Evie, featuring a Quadrille performed by four of Evie’s young students and an honor guard by the Oxford Mounted Police Patrol. Evie had been the instructor for the Quadrille Team and was the trainer for the Oxford Mounted Police Patrol. In the musical tribute to Evie, everyone was encouraged to sing along. The live music was followed by some very moving testimonials by friends, family, and students of Evie.
The show was a “sell out” with 38 entries for the Combined Test and 29 Dressage entries. The Combined Test consisted of Dressage and Cross Country tests at the Novice, Beginner Novice, and Modified Beginner Novice levels, as well as three other divisions: Cheetah 12”, Bobcat 18”, and Antelope 24”.
The cross country jumps were mostly in the open, with part of the course taking riders through the woods. The course was safe and inviting, with some challenges. It was well designed and built to allow very young riders gain cross country experience and build confidence, as well as for more experienced riders to move up. Volunteer parents and friends were jump judges and score runners.
Peggy Gaboury of Williston TN was Dressage judge, and the show offered ten levels of tests from Introductory to USEF First Level. There was also a Prix Caprilli division, in which there are jumping obstacles (caveletti) within the dressage test.
Bob and Russell Tumlin plan to continue the training and show traditions at Cedar Wind Farm and are planning more Horse Trails and Dressage competition for the future. Evie’s legacy continues.
