Annual Summer Horse Camp Review

It’s time to plan for summer camp!  You can spend days, and even nights, following your passion to ride and learn about your equine friends. There are many summer horseback riding camps offered in the mid-south area. Following is a sampling of horse-related camp activities, listed in alphabetical order. Every attempt has been made to verify the accuracy of the information listed, but please check with the individual camp of interest, as information may change.
 
Adamo Equestrianat Stone Gate Farm, 8335 Beaver Ridge Rd, Knoxville, TN, offers instruction from beginner level to students competing in the “AA” show circuits. They offer training and finishing of hunters, jumpers, equitation, and driving horses. Summer camps are every week in June with 2 in July, running through July 14; camp hours are 8 am- 12:30 pm. Aintree FarmsPony Camp, at 8999 Claiborne Farm Dr., has been a tradition in Germantown, TN since 1992. The camp is a wonderful experience, geared for the beginner to the novice rider, ages 4 and up. Aintree pony camp will teach your child basic horsemanship skills both on and off the horse. Sessions for 2014 are June 9-13, June 23-27, and July 7-11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $375/week. Daily activities include an hour lesson with professional staff on safe school horses, horsey arts and crafts, and creative learning about horsemanship and barn etiquette. Campers can swim at the end of the day in the neighborhood pool. Camp week concludes with a horse show where campers can show off their new skills for their parents. Autumn Chase Farm, 5580 Forest Hill Irene Rd., Collierville, TN 38125,offers 2 weeks of camps for 2014: June 23-27 and July 14-20, 9 am – 2 pm daily. Camps are $350 per session. All campers will have a riding lesson every day, as well as horse care lessons, trail rides, games, arts and crafts. Their rider education program spotlights safety, understanding, and fun. Back 9 Farms,4260 Spring Creek Rd., Lavinia, TN is the summer camp for all horse crazy kids! Our highly successful program boasts indoor and outdoor arenas, allowing for separate areas for different experience levels. All activities revolve around horses with the most time in the saddle, the best camp horses, and loads of activities to teach horsemanship, grooming, safety and horsekeeping skills. Blue Ribbon Riding Academy, 439 E. Sowell Rd., Canton MS, 39046, offers the camp for children ages 4 and up. Blue Ribbon camps are a fantastic way to expose children to horses, or sharpen existing riding skills. There’s lots of ride time at camp and a horseshow every Friday! Brewer Equestrian Center, 448 Country Road 855, Shannon, Mississippi (near Tupelo, MS) offers two camp opportunities: Intro to Riding and Horse Camp is July 7-12, 9 am – 3 pm daily for ages 5 (pre approved) -10; limited to 10 campers. Cost $275. Care until 5:30 pm available for fee. Campers experience “all things horse” from safety to proper care of horse and how to ride. Young Riders Jump Camp is July 17-21 for riders with some experience who can ride independently. Geared toward USPC riders working on D1 and D2 ratings. $225; $50 deposit required; limit 10 campers. Camp of the Rising Son, French Camp, Mississippi:  For ages 13-17, Horse Camp isJuly 14-19, 2014.Cost is $489.  Horse Campoffers a variety of horse activities and lessons for all levels of horse lovers! At horse camp, you can explore over 300 acres on horseback and learn horse-handling skills as well as vaulting which is gymnastics on horseback! Camp Sycamore Hills,Ashland City, TN will be hosting a variety of week-long horse camps in June and July for various ages and levels of experience, from third grade to twelfth grade. Camps are education intensive – basic horsemanship, first aid, horse show prep, etc., with fun horse-related arts and crafts, team competitions, and a horse show on the last day of camp. Cedar Wind Farm, Oxford, MS, in conjunction with Delta Dressage Association, will host the 10th annual Dressage and Eventing Camp June 19-22, 2014. Primarily an adult camp for both advanced training and beginners, junior campers will be in separate groups. The 4-day camp is a dressage and/or eventing “get away.” Clayton Martin is the main Dressage clinician, with Dressage instructor Evie Tumlin. Peggy Gaboury will teach lunging and long line lessons and Pat Kessler instructs Tai Chi for riders. For eventers, the jumping and cross country clinician is Alan Fox. Hillside Stables, 2720 Red Banks Rd. N., Byhalia, MS. Camps run Monday-Friday, 9am to 4pm, June 2-6, June 9-13, and July 14-18. Campers aged 6-16 years receive instruction in English or western riding, horse safety, barn activities and crafts. Campers can also try their hand at ground school, round pen and the equine obstacle course.  Campers are grouped by skill level, so everyone can have fun and improve their horsemanship. Horsemania Camp at Coyote Run Arena, Mason, TN offers an overnight camp for girls and day camp for boys and girls. This is the perfect camp to introduce your child to Western Horsemanship. The lessons are taught by an HSA certified instructor with emphasis on horse safety, grooming and saddling.  Horsemania camp introduces beginners to horseback riding and builds confidence in the saddle. On the last day of camp parents can watch their children perform in a small horse show.  Weekly sessions start June 2 and continue through the last week of July.  Coyote Run Arena is a 74,000 sq. ft. indoor facility, so camps are never rained out. Maple Grove Farm, at 4961 Windsong Park Drive in Collierville, TN offers week-long Farm Camp for children ages 4-9 throughout June and July.  Daily activities are an enriching experience in the outdoors, and include pony rides and petting farm, zip line, swimming pool and much more.  Camp instructors encourage each child's curiosity, creativity and capacity for personal growth in a non-denominational Christian atmosphere. Marigny Park Stables at 5875 Center Hill Rd. in Olive Branch, MS has summer camp for children ages 6-16. Camp I is June 10-14, cost is $350. Camp II is July 10-12. Cost is $210. Menagerie Farm, 3135 Shea Road, Collierville, TN, offers educational summer day camp all four weeks of June, 2014 for children ages 4-12. All Day camp is Monday-Friday, 8 am – 5 pm and costs $275. Half Day camp is Monday-Friday, 8 am – 1 pm and costs $195. Campers will ride daily, with a horse show at the end of the week. Western riding lessons taught, with 30 years of experience. Midland Farms, 120 Trott Rd., Bell Buckle, TN (between Murfreesboro TN and Shelbyville) will host 2 summer riding camps: June 9-13 and July 14-18 from 9 am – 3 pm.  Price per week is $225. Music City Riding Academy, 13905 Old Hickory Blvd., Nashville, TN, offers ten sessions of summer riding camps this year: two in May, four in June, and four in July. The Academy has operated a summer day camp program for 27 years. Campers must be 8 years of age and camp runs 8 am – 2 pm daily. Campers have riding lessons on well-schooled horses in the arena. They learn to how care for their horses, such as feeding, grooming, observing farrier work and veterinary procedures. Helmets are worn at all times when handling/riding the horses. Each camper works at his/her own pace. Need-A-Hand Horse Training, Murfreesboro, TN. Courtney Smith, a graduate of the MTSU Horse Science Program and a professional trainer, will be hosting five camps this summer. From June 9 to 13, children aged 12 and up can attend Advanced Camp. Rodeo Camp is June 16-20 for ages 7 and up. Learn roping, barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, and more. From July 7 to 11, children aged seven and up can learn about “Everything Horses,” including various disciplines, jumping, barrel racing, trail riding, and reining. Oak Crest Farm,off of Monterey Road in Eads, TN, will offer three weeks of summer camp: June 9-13, June 16-20, and June 23-27. Cost of the camp is $375 per week and camp times are 9am to 3pm. Oak Crest Farm offers horse and pony lovers the opportunity to develop or advance their horsemanship and riding skills in a safe and encouraging environment. Facilities include two arenas: a covered arena and an outdoor arena. Oak Hill Stables,at 670 County Road 101, Oxford, MS, offers Camp Oak Hill June 22-August 3, 2014. The Horseback Riding Camp is for girls 7-19 years of age, experienced to beginner riders. Choices are overnight camping in the bunkhouse and day-only camp. Camp activities include riding, swimming, arts & crafts, field trips, and horseshows. Each camp session runs Monday – Friday and offers individualized instruction for all levels of riders. The activities include English riding, grooming, safety, handling, and the general care of horses. Pony Pee Wee Camp for ages 4-8 is May 26-30. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  All other sessions are 9 am – 1 pm and are for riders ages 7-17. Second session is June 9-13 for Beginner and Intermediate riders. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a new camp starting each week. Camp fee is $285 per week. Campers learn how to care for horses as well as how to walk, trot, canter and trail ride. The culmination of camp is a horse show with awards for all. Three weeks of Advanced Camps are offered: June 9-13; June 23-27; and June 30-July 3. South Wind Stables, at 10181 State Line Road, Olive Branch, MS, runs 6 weeks Summer Camps for children ages 5 and up, beginning June 9 (for three weeks)  with July 4th week off. Three weeks in July. Camp hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Camps are filled with hunter jumper training, trail rides, stable games, and equestrian crafts. Campers learn grooming, bathing, tacking up horses, and plenty of horsemanship skills. Campers adopt a horse each week to ride every day. Beginners through intermediate riders. Tranquility Trails, Ashland, MS. Kids Farm and Nature Camp. One day camp, Thursday, May 29, 2014, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Targeted to ages 6-10. Children will learn hands-on about farm animals, wild animals on the farm, farm crops, wild plants and trees. Trinity Farm, 10365 Monroe Lake, Lakeland, TN. 2014 Summer camp dates are: June 2-6, Pinecrest at Trinity June 15-20, July 7-11, and July 21-25.  Hours are 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. daily. *UT Martin Equestrian, Martin, TN, offers two summer camps: Skyhawk Equestrian Camp, June 1-5, 2014 at the West TN Ag Pavillion, Martin, TN. For Intermediate riders, English or western, ages 8 and up, female riders. Campers get fundamental instruction on basic horsemanship skills, regardless of experience level. Cost $500. Deadline is May 15, 2014. Premier Equestrian Camp, June 22-25, 2014 at Graves Stables, Martin, TN. Ages 14-18. English or western. Cost $800. Deadline is June 9, 2014. Participants experience a day in the life of a Skyhawk Equestrian. Ride team horses; get instruction from coaching staff; overview of varsity equestrian; focus on equitation over fences/ on flat or Horsemanship and Reining. Victory Ranch Summer Camp, at 4330 Mecklinberg, Bolivar, TN is a non-denominational Christian summer camp and retreat center. Victory Ranch hosts about 800 campers each summer and features top outdoor adventure areas and great accommodations. It is located on 550 acres of rolling hills and woodlands in Hardeman County. Camp includes horseback riding among a host of other activities. Seven summer camp sessions run May 27-July 19. Some camps for boys only, some for girls only, some coed. Winterview Farm, a hunter/ jumper facility at 140 Spring Road, Flora, Mississippi. Summer Horsemanship Camps offer a full spectrum of horsemanship activities from barn chores to participating in a horse show.  Beginner and Advanced Camp sessions are weekly from Memorial Day through July 11. For advanced camp, riders must be involved in the farm’s lesson program or be pre-approved. Highlights include a trail ride, scavenger hunt, costume theme days, games and more.
