Nashoba Carriage Association Selects 2011 Sonny Foster Award Recipient
Wanda Chancellor accepted the 2011 Sonny Foster Award on behalf of her pony, Flying Diamond Twist and Trot. The award was presented at the annual Christmas party held at the home of Jimmy and Tempe Chancellor. The award is given every year to the member who has done the most to promote the Nashoba Carriage Association and the sport of driving. "Twister," an 18-year-old Welsh pony, was purchased by Wanda as a three year old in order to participate in the new driving club started by Sonny Foster in 1997.
Sonny was the first person to help Wanda hitch Twister to his new cart at a drive in Sumter, MS. "Sonny and Twister had a love/hate relationship," according to Wanda. "Sonny often accused me of making a pet out of him instead of treating him like a horse, but Sonny was heard to say that if I ever got tired of him, he would certainly be interested in taking him off my hands." Many of the NCA members traveled and showed together. At one of these shows Twister was stalled next to Sonny and Mary Liz's tack stall. When Sonny got ready for his first class, he couldn't find his straw hat. Unfortunately, it had been pulled through the bars and partially eaten by Twister. Sonny just shook his head and his hat, fussed a little and put the slightly rumpled hat on his head.
Not only did Twister have a special relationship with Sonny, but he also has a special relationship with the NCA. He has participated in every Nashoba Carriage Classic and most Germantown Charity Horse Shows. If his owner was not showing him, he was teaching someone else how to drive and win. He has been shown by past GCHS princess, Nora Land; members Susan Jay, Jill Cox, and Brooke Ballenger. Susan and Jill were both new drivers, but won with Reserve Champion and Championship ribbons. Twister has taught many newbies to drive, both adults and children. For several years a junior driving camp was held at Kimberlin Farms in Olive Branch, with Twister one of the lesson horses for children. He was a favorite of the kids because he would GO fast around the cones. He also is requested every year to be one of the driving ponies for Joanna Wilburn's Beginning Driving Clinic held at Rollingwoods Farm.
Twister is a great all-round pony who has certainly done his part to promote the sport of driving. And he has many more good years to teach and compete.
