Brownland Farm finished its 58th year of horse shows with the Autumn Classic over Halloween weekend, October 27-31, 2021. Of course a Halloween party on Saturday evening October 30 had to be part of the horse show festivities. This party featured drinks, food, and a movie under the big top by the Jumper Ring: “The Haunted Mansion.” Also part of the Halloween-themed show was a costume parade on Friday, sponsored by Cornerstone Equestrian.
Meanwhile, back at the horse show, Caroline Mirts on her Gelato, trained by Craig Allen, was the top scoring non professional in Friday’s $25,000 Hunter Derby. It was a very competitive class as 16 of the best of the best vied for the highest score on the beautiful course designed by Robert Barton. David Jennings continued his winning streak at Brownland on Jordantinus (owned by Allison Ventura) in this year’s $25,000 Hunter Derby Finals. Kelly Mullen rode Joni Werthan’s Menelik to second place and rode Cheryl Rubestein’s Capisce to third place. Roger Turner and Persistence (owned by Denise Short) rounded out the top four. Mullen was back in the ribbons with fifth place on Sea Glass, sixth on Cloud 9, eighth on Riverside, and ninth on Golden.
The show even featured a $500 Groom’s Class on Thursday, Oct. 28, with cash prizes of $250 to the winner; $150 to second; $100 to third of both the Hunter and Jumper sections. The Hunter class winner was Francisco “Pancho” Martinez from Phoebe Sheet’s barn, and the Jumper class winner was Eduardo Gonzalez riding Libby Antisdel Hott’s ‘Blue Moon 22,’ from David Jennings’ Full Circle Farm. Full Circle Farm posted: “Congratulations to our own Eduardo Gonzalezfor winning the Jumper section of the $500 Groom’s class. Many thanks to all of the hard working grooms who work endlessly behind the scenes to keep our horses happy, healthy, and competing in top form.”
In the highlight of the show, twelve entries vied for the $15,000 first place prize money in the $50,000 Brownland Grand Prix. This time it was Genevieve Munson on Charlene who won the prize, bumping David Jennings down to second place ($11,000) on Cendatus PS. Christian Currey was third with Unesco Du Rouet, with Colleen Acosta fourth on Lancome. Laura Linback placed fifth with Skat 15 and David Jennings picked up sixth on his previous Grand Prix winner Follow Me. Munson also picked up the seventh place ribbon on Zonderling and tenth on Contendro Star. That left Haley Gassel in ninth with Iliano Van D’Abelendreef.
In the $7,500 Welcome Stake, Munson and Contendro Star were the winners, with David Jennings in second on Cendatus PS. Munson and Charlene also won the $5,000 Meter 1.30 Stake.
