The Tennessee High School Rodeo Association (TNHSRA) kicked off their 2020-21 season with a successful weekend at the Obion County Fair Grounds in Union City, TN, September 12-13, 2020. The weekend began with a barrel race on Saturday morning to benefit the Ashley Brooks Memorial Rodeo Scholarship Fund. Despite the rainy conditions, many came out to support this cause. The first rodeo performance began Saturday evening at 7 p.m. with a special tribute to Ashley, a TNHSRA alumnus, which included her brother Tyler Brooks and two of her beloved horses. Scholarships were presented in Ashley’s memory to Mary Chandler King and Zane White.
The Tennessee High School Rodeo Association is coming off an outstanding 2019-2020 season in which several team members won top ten statuses in go rounds of many events at the National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR). To top it off, Jaycee Lowery from Gardendale, Alabama won the national title in Girls Cutting at the NHSRA!
And this year looks like it will not disappoint either. The mud did not slow these kids down; they gave it their all and made some fabulous runs. The winners from Saturday’s performance include Denver Moore in the bareback riding, Ali Covey in barrel racing, Lane Webb in tie down roping, Taylor Dunlap in pole bending, Lane Webb and Bryson Tays in team roping, Anna Wilder in breakaway roping, Emma Kate Wilder in goat tying, and Sage Isom in bull riding. Sunday’s winners were: Anna Wilder and Jessie Steele tied for first in barrel racing; Bryson Tays in tie down roping, Taylor Dunlap in pole bending, Fort Robbins and Lane Mayfield in team roping, Owen Gibson in breakaway roping, Blair Mabry in Steer Wrestling, and Blaize Deere in goat tying.
Sunday’s rodeo began with a church service with a message presented by John Luthi, UT Martin’s Rodeo Coach. He inspired the listeners to seek God’s purpose for their lives and shared meaningful scripture. Two of the high school members, Ali Reese Prince and Lainey Hutchison, sang “How Great Thou Art.”
The Obion County Fairgrounds was a great location and host for the events that took place over the weekend. The rodeo was produced by Keith Brooks, and proceeds went to the Ashley Brooks Memorial Rodeo Scholarship Fund. Thanks to generous sponsors Cole and Short Crop Insurance, First Choice Kubota, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Taylor Chevrolet, Taylor Ford, and Wendell Alexander Real Estate, as well as many members of the community who supported these efforts.
TNHSRA also thanks TN Farmers Co-Op, Stockdale’s, and Tractor Supply Company for their sponsorships each year. And, of course, the parents of all the contestants do not go unnoticed for your investment in these youth and this association. It takes much time, money and volunteer hours to make this such a successful association.
