Magnolia, Ark. – The University of Tennessee at Martin ran into some tough luck at the rodeo hosted by Southern Arkansas over the first weekend in November (1-3), as the men’s team placed fifth and the women’s squad finished ninth in their respective team standings.
UT Martin’s men’s team posted 250 overall points, while the women’s team earned 40 points over the three-day event. Missouri Valley College and East Mississippi Community College tied for the men’s title with 580 points, and Southern Arkansas led the women’s side with 305 points.
Four UT Martin cowboys came away with points in bareback riding, led by Stetson Bierman. The sophomore from Hidalgo, Illinois finished second in average (135), second in the opening round (69), and fourth in the short goes (66). He was closely followed by Hunter Green, who placed second in the short round (72), third in average (130), and fourth in the first round (58). Weston Hamilton’s score of 51 in the first go was good enough for a fifth-place effort in that round and in average. Blake Leamon also recorded a fifth-place finish in the short round with a total of 63 points.
Cole Walker led the way for UT Martin in calf roping with his 23.8 average and 11.9 time in the short go that each placed third in the event. Craig Parks tallied a fourth-place finish in both average (27.5) and in the second round (14.9), while Robbie Van Holten’s time of 11.4 seconds in the opening go was good enough for sixth place.
The UT Martin duo of Anna Scott and Lauren Heck each generated points in breakaway roping. Scott placed fourth across the board with recorded times of 3.1 (first round), 12.5 (short go) and 15.6 (average). Heck’s 16.4 average split fifth, while her 13.0 in the second round placed sixth in the field.
Competing in his second event of the rodeo, Van Holten also notched points in steer wrestling. The graduate out of Chesapeake, Va. finished third in the opening round (5.9) and sixth in the short go.
Kailey Schmidt and Kayla Lombardo each recorded points for UT Martin in goat tying. Schmidt’s 7.6 in the opening round split third, while Lombardo’s time of 8.3 seconds in the short round split sixth.
UT Martin rounds out its fall schedule when the teams make the short trek to the rodeo hosted by Murray State on Nov. 21-23.
