The hot September weather couldn’t stop the hunter and jumper riders from fueling the competition at Brownland Farm’s Fall Shows, September 4-8 and September 11-15. “It was supposed to be a scorcher Saturday, so management made the decision to move the Grand Prix to first thing Saturday morning in order to prevent the high temperatures from causing any issues,” Michelle Anderton told us.
At the Fall I show on Saturday September 7, Michael Tokaruk was in the winner’s circle of the $25,000 Brownland Farm Grand Prix with Eagle Eyes P.S., prevailing over the other 25 entries. Lauren Hester was second with Happy Feet B, and Michael took third with his other horse Junta. Christian Currey finished fourth with Califa, and Lauren Hester placed fifth with her other horse Cooper 166.
Tokaruk also won first place in the $7,500 Welcome Stake 1.40m with the handsome grey Steel The Love.
Another highlight of the show was the $5,000 Hunter Derby on Friday morning, September 6. Taking the top two places in the Derby was Julie Curtin aboard her Point Being for first, and on Lizabeth Fisher’s The Entertainer for second. She also placed fourth with Amy Squier Perez’ Commentary. Kelly Mullen was third with A Timely Affair. This was another big class with 26 entries.
“Friday September 13, 2019 was the next to last chance to qualify for the $25,000 Hunter Derby Finals, taking place on October 25. The last $5,000 Derby of the Brownland Farm season is October 18. At the completion of that class, any horse who has won a derby during the 2019 Brownland Farm season, or any horse that has completed three derbies at Brownland, will be qualified for the big class during the last AA show for the year, Brownland Farm Autumn Classic,” Michelle said.
“The winning horses of both the Hunter Derby and Grand Prix were outfitted in a cooler custom-made by Integrity Linens. Their products have so much attention to details and are beautifully crafted right here in the South,” Michelle told us. “We are also proud to have SmartPak, Wilker’s, Animo, and Turning Point Custom Bonnets as sponsors of these classes.”
Julie Curtin was certainly busy at this show, riding in 49 classes. Her Point Being was also Champion in Green Hunter 3’6”/3’9” High Performance.
Julie’s student Christina Fisher cleaned up in the Amateur/Owner 3’6” division, taking the Championship with Levland and winning the A/O Hunter Classic with Levland. Reserve Champion in the A/O Hunter 3/6” division was Isabel Harbour with Fitz.
Louise Graves and Zavira won the Meter 1.20 Jumper and the $5,000 Meter 1.30 Stake.
Natalie Hanisco was Champion with Dun N Glitter in the Equitation 15-17.
Hunter Beasley and Celtic Creeks First Light was Champion in Children’s Pony Hunter, with Amy Krebs and Wynnbrook Polar Vortex taking Reserve.
In the USHJA Hunter 2’ division, Krebs and Somermist Storm Warning were Championships.
Caroline Mirts was also a busy rider at the show, entering 42 classes. She was Champion in Junior Hunter 3’3” and first in the Junior Hunter Classic 3’3” on Allen Craig’s Quoted, and Champion in Medium/Large Pony Hunter with her own Envy. She and Envy were second in the Washington Pony Medal.
Donald Sheehan was also busy with 42 classes, taking the Reserve Championship with Quoted in Green Hunter 3’6”/3’9” High Performance; Champion in Green Hunter 3’ on Indian Ocean; and Champion in Green Hunter 3’3” with Playground. He was first and second in the Green Hunter Incentive Stake 3’/3’3” on Indian Ocean and Playground, respectively. In the USHJA divisions, he was Reserve Champion with Deputy Balou in the 2’9” section.
But Kelly Mullen likely got the biggest workout of the show, riding in 62 classes. She rode five horses in the $5,000 Brownland Farm Hunter Derby, placing third with A Timely Affair. She was Champion in Low Working Hunter with Cartiano; Reserve in Green Hunter 3’ with Precision; and Reserve in USHJA Hunter 3’ with Allison Rayburn’s Captivate.
Natalie Sharp won the WASH/NAL Children’s Hunter Classic with Rio-Fined and was Champion in the Children’s Hunter 15-17 division, also on Rio-Fined, taking first in all five classes.
