Shelby Show Place Arena in Memphis, Tenn. was the site of the 6th annual St. Jude Barrel Jam on February 22-24, 2019, an event that raises funds for all the free health care services that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital provides to children with cancer. The show offered $10,000 added money, with $2,000 added Open on Friday and Saturday, $250 added Future Legends and $1,000 added Pole Bending on Saturday. On Sunday, the Future Legends ($250 added) were back after Cowboy Church, and Sunday’s Open was $2,500 added.
Katie and Jamie White were at the helm managing the affair. Jamie said that Friday night’s Open attracted 301 runs; there were 449 for Saturday’s Open; and there were already 350 signed up for Sunday’s Open by early Saturday afternoon. Jamie estimated they would reach about 400 runs in Sunday’s Open. On Saturday there were 60 runs in the Future Legends.
In addition to the opportunity to win some good money rounding the barrels, there were awards for the top fundraisers for St. Jude. There was a stallion auction featuring 12 star barrel racing stallions. There was a silent auction with a wide variety of items up for bid, presided over by Nancy Stephenson. And there were plenty of St. Jude Barrel Jam T-shirts and sweat shirts for sale. By early Saturday afternoon, the event had already raised $143,000 for St. Jude, said Jamie White.
On Saturday there was a “moving Mission Moment,” Katie said, before the Open started, with special testimonies by people who have been served by St. Jude.
There were multiple vendors on hand, including JHA Saddle & Tack of Jackson, Missouri; CEP (Complete Equine Performance), Equine Connect Therapy, Van’s Leather Craft, Art by Ria, and more.
Fessler Photography was on hand to photograph everyone’s round, and Puhl’s Videos saved all the action for later viewing.
Among the top performers at the Barrel Jam was Nealy Dalton riding Miss Mango Tango. She was first on Friday (14.802), second on Saturday (14.755), 12th on Sunday, and finished third in the 1D average.
Marne Loosenort and Lovin Fame (14.717) were first in the Open 1D on Saturday, and Madison Shelton with Royal French Jet (14.781) won the Sunday Open 1D.
In the Future Legends, Crystal Mason was first in Saturday’s 1D on Doc Freckles Legacy (15.294) and also first on Sunday (15.321). In Saturday’s Future Legends, Kaylee Childress came in second and third with Clay (15.690) and Browser (14.695), respectively. On Sunday, Abigail Clawson took the second and third positions on Queen (15.507) and Zous (15.726), respectively.
