Livingston, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s rodeo team earned runner-up honors, while the women’s squad notched a fourth-place finish at the rodeo hosted by West Alabama, Sept. 29-Oct. 1.
The UT Martin men’s team racked up 515 points, trailing only Missouri Valley College (770). The women’s squad amassed 110 points as Southern Arkansas (285 points) ranked atop the team standings.
Houston Herbert dominated the bareback riding finals, sweeping top honors in all three rounds. The junior from Cottage Grove, Tenn. was the top cowboy in the opening round (77), the short go (73) and in average (150). Kalvin Kempster also earned points for UT Martin, placing fifth in the short go (63) and in average (109).
On the women’s side, Alexandra Lyle opened the scoring with fifth-place finishes in both the short go (13.2) and in average (16.5) of breakaway roping.
In steer wrestling, Craig Parks was responsible for points in the second round (6.8, fourth) as well as in average (13.1, sixth).
Hannah Mosley turned in solid performances in each of the three rounds of goat tying. She placed fourth in average (20.1) after splitting fifth in the first round (9.4) and finishing sixth in the short go (10.7).
Five UT Martin cowboys earned points in the team roping event, paced by the team of Quentin Sawyer and Patrick Houchins. That duo finished second with a time of 7.3 seconds in the short go, leading to a second-place effort in average (15.9). Douglas Rich teamed with East Mississippi’s Marcus Theriot to split second in the opening round (6.7), place sixth in the short go (14.2) and rank fifth in average (20.9). Tucker Kail and Clay Tilley also accounted for fourth-place accolades in the short go (12.1) and in average (20.1).
Madison Crow led the charge for the UT Martin women’s team in barrel racing, as four cowgirls contributed points in that event. A senior from Kingston Springs, Tenn., Crow finished first in average (32.86), first in the short go (16.27) and split first in the opening round (16.59). Dominique Barlow placed third in average (34.12) and third in the short go (17.14) while Kenzley Wilson was responsible for times of 16.6 in the first round (third), 21.57 in the second round (sixth) and 38.17 in average (sixth). Ashley Brooks also pitched in with top-six finishes in each round, compiling times of 16.74 in the first round (sixth), 18.03 in the short go (fifth) and 34.77 in average (fifth).
Ryan McDaniel was one of only two cowboys to earn points in bull riding. His first-round score of 82 ranked first and held on to be the best score in the average as well.
UT Martin resumes its fall schedule at Murray State University on Oct. 13-15.
