Kendra Hockron had a dream and, like many of us, it included horses. She has to pinch herself often these days to see if she is awake, because her dream has come true.
Kendra moved into her new facility she calls DSD Stables in September 2017. This training barn is located 8200 Brunswick Road in the Rosemark area near Millington TN. It consists of a stable with nine stalls, and includes an automatic fly spray system, a heated and air conditioned tack room, heated wash rack with hot water, and even an Amazon Alexa controlled sound system. There is also a storage barn and a small outdoor lighted arena with sand footing. Kendra has the added advantage of being able to live at the facility in a house that matches the exterior of the barn.
Kendra has been teaching riding in the Memphis area for several years. She grew up in Bemus Point, New York, but decided after experiencing a minus 40 degree day, she wanted to move south. She visited a friend in Collierville, Tennessee and knew this was the place she wanted to be. Her upstate New York Connections still come in handy, though. Her father ships her timothy and grass hay, which he grows, by the semi trailer load. This is a very nutritious variety of hay that cannot be grown this far south.
Kendra teaches both English and western riding. She works with Barrel Racers, Hunters, Dressage, Western Pleasure, and Reining. She is certified by the American Riding Instructors Association (ARIA) and currently has about 20 regular students. She teaches beginners and advanced riding in both private and group lessons. Inside the climate controlled tack room is a play station to occupy the younger siblings of Kendra’s riding students during their lessons One teaching tool that she uses is a Google Classroom Tablet, something a little different from most riding instruction.
She has a shelf full of trophies won by her Palomino, Sky, who has been in the top ten three times at the Golden Ticket Palomino Circuit.
In addition to group and private lessons, Kendra teaches 4-H horsemanship. The 4-H club has two meetings each month, one at a nearby church and one at DSD. She also helps with the programs at Woodstock-Cuba Saddle Club, including the annual Horsapalooza event and coaching the drill team.
Kendra is proud of her newly acquired horse facility and hopes it will be a real asset to the mid-south horse community.
