CASPER, Wyo. – Ross Mitchell, who recently completed his freshman season at the University of Tennessee at Martin, earned a victory during Saturday (June 17) evening’s short go in team roping before finishing second in the national standings at the 69th annual College National Finals Rodeo.
A native of Bolivar, Tenn., Mitchell once again joined forces with East Mississippi’s Ethan Wheeler to record a time of 5.5 seconds during Saturday’s performance round – which was clocked as the best time out of the 12 qualified teams. Their overall score of 28.1 seconds finished second in the nation behind only the Texas Tech squad of Wesley Thorp and Cole Wheeler (25.2 seconds).
Mitchell was the lone UT Martin representative to compete for a national championship at the 2017 CNFR. Other final results involving UT Martin participants included Ryan McDaniel finishing 17th of 39 cowboys in bull riding (no score), Houston Herbert coming in 18th place out of 34 in bareback riding (191.5), Douglas Rich and East Mississippi’s Marcus Theriot placing 25th out of 44 in team roping (5.4), Kenzley Wilson finishing 30th out of 48 with a 2.3 in breakaway roping, Nealey Dalton coming in 36th place out of 52 in barrel racing (48.70) and Madison Crow placing 46th out of 52 with a 50.63 in barrel racing.
The 2017 CNFR concludes another strong season for UT Martin rodeo. The men’s team earned five top-three finishes with two victories, while the women’s squad placed third or better in seven rodeos, including one win.
Opening Day of 2017 CNFR

Casper, Wyo. – Three University of Tennessee at Martin riders got started on the opening day, June 11, 2017, of the 69th annual College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR), held at the Casper Events Center.
Houston Herbert, Ryan McDaniel and Kenzley Wilson each made their CNFR debuts among the best of the best in collegiate rodeo during the matinee session.
Wilson came through with the best score, tying for first place out of 48 competitors in breakaway roping. The junior from Black Oak, Ark. recorded a time of 2.3 seconds to tie Southeast Oklahoma State’s Brandi Epps for top honors after the first round.
A junior hailing from College Grove, Tenn., Herbert placed 19th out of 34 cowboys in bareback riding. He compiled 65.5 points to open his CNFR performance.
McDaniel, a sophomore from Yuma, Tenn., took part in the bull riding event today but did not score. In fact, only 11 of the 39 competitors in bull riding recorded a score on the opening day.
Herbert returns to action on Monday, June 12 with his second round performance in the bareback riding slack. Each of the remaining UT Martin representatives will open in the slack performances tomorrow at the 2017 CNFR. Ross Mitchell (alongside East Mississippi’s Ethan Wheeler) and Douglas Rich (alongside East Mississippi’s Marcus Theriot) will compete in team roping, while Madison Crow and Nealey Dalton will both debut in barrel racing.
Day Two of 2017 College National Finals Rodeo

Casper, Wyo. – Five University of Tennessee at Martin cowboys and cowgirls took part on the second day of the 2017 College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR), June 12, 2017, at the Casper Events Center.
Nealey Dalton began her fourth career postseason appearance with an impressive showing in barrel racing. The senior from Adamsville, Tenn. secured a time of 14.73 seconds to rank sixth out of 52 competitors in the event.
A freshman hailing from Bolivar, Tenn., Ross Mitchell made his CNFR debut alongside East Mississippi’s Ethan Wheeler in team roping. The duo accounted for a time of 6.6 seconds, which comes in at fifth place out of 44 participants.
Houston Herbert made his second appearance in as many days in the bareback riding event. The junior out of College Grove, Tenn. compiled 63.5 points during his second round, as his 129.0 overall points now rank ninth out of 34 in the individual standings.
Making her CNFR debut was Madison Crow, a senior from Kingston Springs, Tenn. She took part in barrel racing, coming in 21st place out of 52 with a time of 14.99 seconds.
Also representing UT Martin was Douglas Rich, who partnered with East Mississippi’s Marcus Theriot in team roping. A senior out of Herrick, Ill., Rich did not compile a score in the opening round.
Six of UT Martin’s seven participants resume their CNFR rounds on Tuesday, June 13. The tandem of Rich/Theriot will ride in the slack second round of team roping before also advancing to the performance round Wednesday evening.
Dalton and Crow will each be represented in the slack performance of barrel racing, while Kenzley Wilson (breakaway roping), Ryan McDaniel (bull riding) and Mitchell/Wheeler (team roping) will all perform in the slack second rounds of their respective events.

Casper, Wyo. – A half-dozen student-athletes represented the University of Tennessee at Martin on the third day,
Tuesday June 13, of the 69th annual College National Finals Rodeo at the Casper Events Center.
Douglas Rich had two performances in team roping, joining forces with Marcus Theriot from East Mississippi Community College. The senior from Herrick, Ill. posted a time of 5.4 seconds in the second round slack before running into some tough luck with a no-score in the evening performance. He and Theriot currently rank sixth out of 44 teams in the individual standings of that event.
A senior from Adamsville, Tenn., Nealey Dalton continued her blazing start at the 2017 CNFR with a time of 14.44 seconds in the second round of barrel racing. She currently sits in 15th place out of 52 participants with an aggregate time of 29.17 seconds.
Also taking part in the second round of the barrel racing was Madison Crow, a senior from Kingston Springs, Tenn. She completed her turn in 15.17 seconds and now ranks 38th in the field with an overall time of 30.16 seconds.

Competing for the third consecutive day, Crow was one of 14 cowgirls who engaged in the third round of barrel racing during this evening’s performance round. The Kingston Springs, Tenn. native dialed up a time of 20.47 seconds, giving her a three-round score of 50.63 seconds. That mark ranks 24th out of 52 participants in the event.
Three UT Martin upperclassmen are scheduled to compete during the performance round on Thursday, June 15. Houston Herbert is set for his third round in bareback riding, Nealey Dalton will compete in her third round of barrel racing and Kenzley Wilson will take part in her third round of breakaway roping tomorrow.

Herbert, a junior from College Grove, Tenn., performed for the first time since Monday. He produced a score of 62.5 in the third round of bareback riding, bringing his overall total to 191.5 points. He currently ranks 16th out of 34 cowboys in the event.
Taking part in her third round of barrel racing was Dalton, who hails from Adamsville, Tenn. The senior crossed the finish line in 19.53 seconds in this evening’s performance to tally a three-round time of 48.70, which ranks 31st in the field of 52 participants.
A junior from Black Oak, Ark., Wilson did not score during her third round of breakaway roping this evening. She ranks 23rd out of 48 cowgirls with an overall time of 2.3 seconds in the event.
