The Arkansas Quarter Horse Association held a four day show on Memorial Day weekend, May 26-29, 2017 at the Paul Battle Arena in Tunica, Mississippi. There were four judges for this show: Manita Defore and Michael Orchetto judged on May 26-27, and Patrick Kayser and Kathy Stone-Skoinik judged on May 28-29. Classes included Trail, Western Riding, Hunt Seat, Ranch Riding, Reining, Driving, Showmanship, Western Pleasure, Barrel Racing and Pole Bending. There were also plenty of Halter classes for mares, geldings and stallions.

This year’s Quarter Horse show marked the fifteenth anniversary of the Stanford Happening Memorial classes, named for the late Jerry Stanford who created the series. Stanford wanted a futurity open to all breeds to promote good shows, good fun, and fellowship.  This year’s series was sponsored by Equine Omega Complete.

There was a Stanford Walk-Trot 10 and under class and a Walk-Trot Level 1 class for children 11 and over, which was won by Shelby Ashcroft from Cabot, Arkansas mounted on Riding The Range. Shelby won $180 plus a saddle. The Stanford Western Pleasure Level 1 Non Pro class had $500 added money. This class was won by Brian Brandy of Cabot, Arkansas riding his family-owned horse, Lazy Looker. The winner’s purse paid him $385 plus a belt buckle. The Champion and Reserve Champion both received a buckle. The Final class in the series was the $500 added Open Ranch Riding Class for non-pro riders, which awarded buckles to the winner and the reserve.  This class had 22 entries and the Champion, taking home $385 plus a buckle, was Randy Schaffhauser from Erwin, Arkansas on Dun Its Code. In total of $2,380 was paid out in the Stanford classes.
