Senatobia, Miss. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo teams took part in the rodeo hosted by Northwest Mississippi Community College April 20-22, as the women’s team finished third and the men’s team placed sixth.
The women’s team accumulated 90 points while the men’s squad tallied 210 points. Southern Arkansas won the women’s side with 490 points while Missouri Valley College took home the men’s title with 665 points.
Houston Herbert continued his standout season in bareback riding, once again sweeping all three phases. He posted the best scores in the opening round (78), short go (76) and in average (154) for UT Martin.
In calf roping, Colt Matthews finished fifth in the opening round with a time of 10.0 seconds flat. He followed that with a sixth-place performance in the short go (28.2 seconds).
Kylie Brueggeman got off to a hot start in breakaway roping, placing second in the opening round with a time of 2.7 seconds. Brueggeman also found the scoring column for the UT Martin women’s team in goat tying, as her 8.5 seconds in the short go ranked as the fifth-best time in the event.
Hunter Styles accumulated points for UT Martin in steer wrestling, as his 8.5 second performance in the first round was good enough for fourth place.
A trio of UT Martin cowboys received points in team roping. Ross Mitchell teamed with East Mississippi’s Ethan Wheeler to place in all three phases, beginning with a fourth-place finish in the opening round (7.5). That duo followed with fifth-place performances in the short go (10.4) and in average (17.9). Robbie Van Holten also joined forces with Styles to post the best time (5.9 seconds) of the opening round.
Six UT Martin cowgirls dialed up points in barrel racing, led by Megan Crow. She finished third in average (27.9) after splitting third in the opening round (13.88) and splitting fourth (14.02) in the short go. Makayla Harrison placed third in the second round (13.96) and fourth in average (27.97) while Molly Hill earned second-place honors with a 13.73 in the first round. Kenzley Wilson split fourth with a time of 14.02 seconds in the short go before placing fifth with a 27.99 average. Madison Crow (13.88 first round, split third) and Ashley Brooks (14.06 short go, sixth) also earned points for UT Martin.
UT Martin rounded out the regular season at the rodeo hosted by Cossatot Community College, April 27-29.
