“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.”

By Nancy Brannon

Lauren Pigford has an “eye” for visual artworks. Her latest endeavor, “Fusion,” is a mixed media platform in which she combines photography and painting. Her talents merge both these talents into a single work using oil, acrylic, watercolor, and photographs. Her landscapes characterize the striking view of water, sky, and farmlands. Her portraits highlight the splendor of horses and other farm animals. Lauren says she wants “to display the allure and charm of our southern culture and share the unique beauty and personalities of its animals.” Her collection was on display at the Memphis Botanic Garden April 4-28, 2017, with a welcome reception held on April 12, 2017. Lauren met with many friends and colleagues, sharing and explaining about her new mixed media artwork at the reception.

To set the stage, Lauren was interviewed on April 6, 2017 on WKNO-FM radio’s program Checking on the Arts about her art exhibit at the Memphis Botanic Garden. “This exhibit is special because it is my first solo exhibition in a large venue where I am not only displaying my landscape paintings, but also my new photography multimedia works of art. The exhibit is on display from April 3-28 and the reception is April 12 from 5-7 at the Memphis Botanic Garden,” Lauren said.

What is the process for creating this mixed media project? How did Lauren get the “painting” look on the photograph of the white horse? “I took this image into Photoshop and applied a masked black background (basically painting over background). I then ordered a large print (36 x 24) on fine art paper. I mounted the print to a large gallery panel. I then applied acrylic moulding gel with matte finish, and then let it sit. I went back over with a mixed black acrylic and gel for the finished look.”

Of her art, she says, “I'm hopeful my art tells a story of heart, soul, tenacity, fearlessness, and courage. All the things that I feel represent life, nature, horses, and southern culture.” Lauren’s exhibit includes horses, landscapes, and even a couple of goats.
