The Tennessee High School Challenge Rodeo brought teens to Memphis from all over Tennessee – and Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Texas – to compete March 10-12, 2017 at the Show Place Arena. This was a 2-go rodeo, with the first rodeo starting on Friday night at 7:00 and ending Saturday afternoon at the 2:00 performance. The second rodeo started on Saturday night at 7:00 and ended with the 1:00 performance on Sunday afternoon.
In addition to their regular competition, a group of rodeo teens came out early on Friday to the Show Place Arena to teach children how to rope, barrel race, and about all the work that goes into competition rodeos. The children all had a blast learning about rodeo! And the teens enjoyed teaching these youngsters their rodeo skills.
In the first rodeo, Marshall Merchant of Oxford, MS led in Bareback Riding, scoring 75.0.
Abby Schultz of Orlinda, TN earned the top points in Barrel Racing with a fast time of 14.302.
Madison Steele of Albertville, AL won the Breakaway Roping with a time of 2.570.
In the Bull Riding, the score was bulls 5, cowboys 0. No cowboys earned points on the bulls in this first session.
In Calf Roping, David Holt of Byhalia, MS won the division with a time of 11.080.
In Goat Tying, Jaide Ellick of Rogersville, TN won the 10 points with a time of 8.450.
Cody Dowell of Olive Branch, MS was fastest in Pole Bending, with a winning time of 20.379.
In Steer Wrestling, Chase Thrasher of Columbia, TN earned the 10 points with a time of 6.640.
In Team Roping, it was Allen Morse (header) of Dawson Springs, KY and Jake Brewer (heeler) of Olive Branch, MS who earned the 10 points with a time of 8.400.
In the second rodeo, Carson Wulfert of Lexington, TN won the Bareback Riding with a time of 73.0.
Layla Roberts of Lexington, TN won the Barrel Racing with a time of 14.278.
In Breakaway Roping, Bethany Stallons of Hopkinsville, KY won with the fastest time of 2.810.
In Bull Riding, Carter Daniel of Bells, TN scored 71.0 to earn the 10 points for the win in that division. Final score was bulls 4, cowboys 1.
In Calf Roping, once again David Holt of Bylalia, MS had the winning time of 9.440, besting his previous time by 1.64.
In Goat Tying, Kyla Matthews of Athens, TN had the fastest time of 9.810.
In Pole Bending, Haley Heaton of Cullman, AL won the 10 points with a time of 20.040.
Jesse Keysaer of Culleoka, TN was tops in Steer Wrestling with a time of 6.080.
In Team Roping, it was Brady Schmidt (header) of Cottage Grove, TN and Ethan Tays (heeler) of Crossville, TN leading the pack with a fast time of 8.000.

Next on the schedule is the Franklin, Tennessee Rodeo April 8-9, 2017 at the Williamson County Ag Expo Park. In May, the teens travel to Martin, Tennessee for the May 6-7 Rodeo. Then, it’s back to Franklin for the June 8-10 Rodeo.
