Jx2 Productions brought NTRL team roping competition to the ShowPlace Arena, February 12-14, 2017 for the 20th annual Muddy River Classic. “This is my favorite location of all the events that we get to do,” said producer Johnny Johnson.

Reflecting on his favorite memories over the last 20 years in Memphis, John recalled: “My old friends Larry Tucker, Dwayne Yost, and the late Dean Thorpe all loved the ribs at Rendezvous and the musicians up and down Beale St. Every year I remember conversations, funny encounters, and all the laughter that we have shared on this one little strip in Memphis. There's also the memory of Philip Murrah, Greg Smith, Ken Silver, Big T, and myself rescuing one of the carriage horses out of a sidewalk drain. Believe me, we were local heroes that night and the next day, we made national news!” Then there was the year “I took my fourth grade son to hear the late great Blues legend James Govan at the Rum Boogie Cafe on Beale St. On the way back home to Piney Flats I tried my best explaining how this was a museum we had visited.” John continued, “I don't know how I could talk about the Muddy River Classic and Memphis without remembering all the good times with my buddy Ben Nelms, which are far too numerous to name. If you haven't been to the Muddy River Classic, you should give it a try. From the ribs at Rendezvous, to the music on Beale St. to the team roping, we have all made memories there that we will never forget.”

About the team roping, John said, “We had a little over 900 teams and a great payout. It was awesome to see some of our young and upcoming talent hit big at this event, as well as some of our veterans. We had outstanding prizes, consisting of buckles, coolers, and saddles. And for our steers, we give big thanks to Cody Warner and Red Burney.”
