For most of February (2-19, 2017), the 52nd annual Dixie National Livestock Show and Rodeo dominated the State Fairgrounds in Jackson, Mississippi. This year’s Rodeo, February 9-15, boasts the largest rodeo east of the Mississippi River and has been voted by the PRCA as one of the top five large indoor Rodeos of the Year for the past five years. This year folks could see video coverage from the rodeo on Wrangler Network February 13-15, 2017.
There were traditional livestock shows of dairy cattle, beef steers and heifers, lambs and goats, and swine. There were Antique Tractor and Farm Expos at the Trade Mart Building. Find out more about all the events at:

The Paint Horse Show at the Equine Center was the first in a series of horse shows, starting Sunday, February 5. The Dixie National Equestrians with Disabilities Show was Tuesday, February 7 at the Equine Center. Then on Wednesday, February 15, the Quarter Horses took center stage at the Coliseum and Equine Center for the week-long Dixie National Quarter Horse Show, the premier event for the Mississippi Quarter Horse Association (MQHA). It is the third largest Quarter Horse show in the nation. Some tangential events included the MQHA Equine Expo and the Southern Classic Horse Sale. This year’s show attracted 1558 entries!
On Valentine’s Day, the show hosted Special Event Roping at the Equine Center, which was double judged. One of the most popular events at the show is the Open Free Style Reining, which took place on Friday night, February 17 at the Coliseum. Sara Lynn Locker, riding Heavy Duty Chex, won the Open division and Analise Granger won the Non-Pro division on Jeans N Reeboks. There were 200 Class Circuit winners – too many to list here. But here is a sampling of some of the results from the early days of the show.
Roping Results: James Barton won first and second in the Junior Tie-Down Roping on CSR Big Smokin Jake and Everyware, respectively. Gary Wells did the same in Senior Tie-Down Roping on Kit Brooks and Check To The Heart, respectively. Carl McBeath was first in the Amateur Tie-Down Roping on Whistlin Hickory, and Bryan Weaver won first in the Amateur Breakaway Roping on Hercules Three Dee.
In Working Cow Horse, Benjamin Baldus earned a first on Seven S Woodrow. In Ranch Riding, Karen Johnson was first on her Gotta Hot Gun. In Reining, Randy Schaffhauser was first with Benjamin Banjo. In Senior Western Pleasure and Western Riding, Carli Pitts earned first on A Good Cookie.
In Trail, Mark Dunham led the way on Hope By Certain. In Junior Trail, Kyle Simmons was first with Our Sleepy Valentine and Jonathan Himes was first in Senior Trail on Only A Natural.
In First Year Working Hunter, Angela Gottler and Caans Navy Blue earned the blue ribbon. Kyle Simmons earned top honors in Progressive Working Hunter, Working Hunter, and Hunter Hack on One Hot Blumers, as well as first in Hunter Under Saddle on Sleeping Under Cover.
In Junior Barrel Racing, Shelly Gish had the best time on Kissyourmoneygoodbye, while Katherine Hancock won the Senior and Amateur Barrel Racing on In Honor Of Hornet.
In Pole Bending, Wendy Thornburg was tops on Chix Six Kix (say that six times really fast!). And in the Amateur Stake Race, she was first with Double Deckajet and second with Chix Six Kix.
Butch Morgan won the Amateur Dally Team Roping Header and Heeler awards on RC Bets You Blue (heading) and SF Check Me Out (heeling).
Amateur Reining winner was Sarah Lynn Locker on Heavy Duty Chex.
Carole Schaff was a big winner in Amateur Equitation Over Fences, Amt. Working Hunter, and Amt. Jumping with her Company Spending.
The Equestrians With Disabilities High Point Winners were: Level 1 - Levi Danforth; Level 2 - Kelsey Weick; Level 3 - Sabrina Griffin.
A silent auction raised over $300 for the Andrew McBeath Scholarship fund. “Andrew B. McBeath was only 29 years old when his life ended tragically in a car crash,” said Laura Miller of Mendenhall, Mississippi. “Andrew held leadership positions in Mississippi Quarter Horse Association as well as at the national level. He was always at Dixie National Quarter Horse Show, especially helping his father during freestyle reining.” On February 17 during the freestyle reining competition, a Run for the Roses and Calcutta also raised money for a scholarship to benefit youth from Region Nine. As part of a fundraiser, several trainers raced on inflatable bounce horses during the Freestyle Reining intermission. See a video on facebook at Dixie National Quarter Horse Show.
Jonathan Carpenter and Elite Saddlery donated a saddle that was awarded on Wednesday, February 15, in Andrew McBeath’s name, to the High Point Cow Horse. Elite Saddlery also donated Rope Cans and Bags, awarded to the High Point horses in the roping classes. Hand-tooled leather book covers, made by Elite Custom Saddlery, were awarded the High Point Youth, High Point Amateur, and High Point Open Horse.
