Women’s Team Finishes Second, Men’s Team Finishes Seventh By Ryne Rickman

MERIDIAN, Miss. – After a three-and-a-half month layoff from official competition, the University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo teams resumed their seasons with the spring opener at East Mississippi Community College in Meridian, Miss. on Feb. 23-25. The University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo teams saw great action, as the women’s squad piled up 280 points on their way to a second-place showing, while the men’s team tallied 120 points to place seventh.

The women’s team finished 55 points behind first-place Missouri Valley College, who also claimed top honors on the men’s side with 1,095 points.

Houston Herbert secured points in bareback riding, finishing fifth in both the opening round (66) and in average (66).
In breakaway roping, Shara Adcock placed fifth in the short go (4.1) before finishing with the fifth-best time in average (7.1).

Hunter Styles came in fourth place with 53 points in the first round of saddle bronc riding. His score of 53 in average also earned him a fourth place finish.

Ethan Foster’s 5.3 second performance in the opening round of steer wrestling was the fifth-best time.

A pair of UT Martin cowboys picked up points in team roping: Tucker Kail and Colt Matthews placed third in the opening round with a time of 7.0 seconds.

The women’s squad dominated the barrel racing event, with five of the team’s cowgirls earning points. Nealey Dalton swept all three rounds, winning the first round (14.73), the second round (14.98) and the average (29.71).

“Congratulations to Nealey Dalton and Miss Mango – winning the Long round, Short Round and the Average at the Ozark Region rodeo in Meridian, Ms.,” said Angela Dalton. Macy Randolph placed in the top-three in average (30.39, second), in the short go (15.24, third) and in the opening round (15.15, split third). Kenzley Wilson finished fourth in the short go (15.36) and in average (30.76), while Ashley Brooks scored 30.95 in average and 15.59 in her second round, placed fourth in both events. Kylie Brueggeman’s 15.27 seconds was the sixth-best time in the opening round.

UT Martin returns to official competition on March 30 through April 1, when the teams travel to the rodeo hosted by Arkansas-Monticello.

UT Martin hosts the 49th annual Spring College Rodeo April 6-8 at the McWherter Agricultural Complex in Martin, Tenn. The rodeo features top bucking bulls and horses from Mark Johnson, Universal Rodeos in Jonesboro, Arkansas. On Wednesday, April 5, EQyss Grooming Products sponsors a Crawfish Supper at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6 is “Bargain Night” when all tickets are $6. Friday, April 7 is Tennessee Tractor Performance night, and also Orange Night to raise money for the Coy Lutz Memorial Scholarship Fund.
