The Mid-South Field Trial season is in full swing, with field trials every week in January, leading up to the National Championship at Ames Plantation, starting February 13, 2017.

Field trial action began January 2-7, 2017 with the Ames Amateur Field Trial, held at Ames Plantation, Grand Junction, TN.  Forty-four dogs ran in the Ames Amateur Field Trial, and there were ten dogs entered in the Derby. Greg Bain and Quinton Wiseman were the judges. Thunderstorms were the dominant weather pattern for this field trial, with only one brace run on Monday, Jan. 2 because of strong storms in the area.

The Ames Amateur winner was Touch’s Smooth Rider, handled by Keith Wright. Second place was Small’s White Stryker, and third place went to SF Mapleleaf. The Derby was cancelled.

The Hobart Ames All Age Classic got started in the afternoon of January 9, 2017, on the National Championship course at Ames Plantation, Grand Junction, TN. Because of the previous days’ snow and frigid temperatures, the start had to be postponed until the afternoon. The morning temperature was still below freezing and the remaining snow was crusted with ice. There were 34 dogs competing for the coveted title. Coldwater Thunder, who ran in the 12th brace with Steve Hurdle handler, was the winner. Coldwater Thunder is owned by Doug Arthur. Second was Whippoorwill Mayhem, owned by Dr. Jack Huffman, who ran in the last brace; and third was Whippoorwill Justified, who ran in the 6th brace, both handled by Larry Huffman. Ronnie Spears is the owner of Whippoorwill Justified.

Twenty-one dogs were entered in the Hobart Ames Memorial Derby Stake. On January 13, 2017 Glassilaun War Paint was declared the winner; handled by Toby Tobiassen and owned by Jamie Nee. He ran in the fifth brace. Game Throne, handled by Ike Todd and owned by Dr. Fred Corder, was second. He ran in the second brace. Third was Touch’s Mega Mike, with Ike Todd the handler, owned by Eddie Sholar. He ran in the third brace.

The 2017 Mississippi Open All-Age Championship and Derby were held at Whippoorwill Farm in Michigan City January 15, 2017 with 17 dogs competing. The All-Age Championship went to Whippoorwill Foto Op, handled by Larry Huffman. Runner Up was Whippoorwill Wild Assault, also handled by Huffman. Five dogs competed in the Derby, with Whippoorwill War Dog, handled by Larry Huffman, taking the win. Cold Water Oddessey, Weldon Bennett handler, the Runner Up. Judges were Don Wiggins and Jon Lam.
