Horseback field trailing is full swing in the Mid-South with at least one or more taking place each week. The “roller coaster” weather has been hot and cold, but scenting is always better when the weather is cool and damp. The horses seem prefer such days as well.
The National All-Age Invitational Championships took place December 5-6, 2016 at the Ames Plantation in Grand Junction, Tenn.This is a qualifier for the National Championship, which will take place February 13-25, 2017 at the Ames Plantation. A gallery of approximately 20 riders watched the dogs work in each brace. The course was in great shape, thanks to the work of Dr. Rick Carlisle, Director of Ames plantation and his staff. The birds were plentiful with large coveys that flew well. Special Thank You to the crew at Ames Plantation! Judges for this field trial were Mike Jackson and Jonathan Burch.
The winner was Mohawk Mill Jacob, (a setter) Gary Winal Owner and Handler, and Scout was Ellen Clements. Runner Up: Erin’s Red Rum, (a pointer) Sean Deering, Owner and Handler.
Fitch Farms-Galena Plantation, south of Holly Springs, Miss., hosted the Open All-Age Field Trial December 12-13, 2016. There were 16 dogs competing. This field Trail is a also qualifier for the Bird Dog National Championship at the Ames Plantation. It was also a qualifier for the Purina Points Trial and Derby Stakes.
First Place went to Cassique’s Boss, with Steve Hurdle, handler, and Rick Stallings, owner. Second Place was Star Dust Chaz, also with Steve Hurdle, handler, and Bob Craig, John Sayre, Raines Jordan and Scott Kermicle, owners
This field trial was dedicated to Bobby McAlexander, a well known supporter and participant in horseback field trials in the mid south for many years.McAlexander has served as a field trial judge in the Southern Championship, the Oklahoma Championship. He served as judge for ten years at the National Championships at Ames Plantation in Grand Junction, Tenn. He is a founding member of the Marshall County Miss. Field Trial Club, and has hosted many field trials. W. O. Fitch, owner of Fitch Farms and founder of the Fitch Farms Field Trial, presented Bobby with an award and thanked him for his years of service to the sport.
