MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s rodeo team earned its first win of the 2017-18 season at East Mississippi Community College, February 22-24, 2018, building up 740 points to top the seven-team field.

The 740 points shattered the men’s previous season-high score of 445 points in the fall opener hosted by Pearl River Community College on Sept. 14-16, 2017. The UT Martin cowboys won the rodeo this weekend by 60 points over second-place Pearl River.

The UT Martin women’s team also competed in this rodeo, posting 120 combined points to come in fifth place.

Houston Herbert and Jonny Walker each accounted for points in bareback riding for UT Martin. Herbert was the only participant to earn points in all three phases, winning the average (145) while placing third in the opening round (72) and in the short go (73). Walker’s 79 points in the second round was the top score in the field.

Kayla Lombardo notched consistent performances throughout in the goat tying event, placing fifth in average (15.6) after identical times of 7.8 seconds in both the first and short rounds.

Three UT Martin cowboys accounted for points in team roping. Teaming alongside Ethan Wheeler from East Mississippi, sophomore Ross Mitchell helped the tandem finish second in average (14.3), second in the opening round (6.5) and third in the short go (7.8). The all-UT Martin team of Quentin Sawyer and Matthews placed fifth in both average (27.8) and in the short round (19.7).

Casey Allen led the way for the women’s squad in barrel racing, finishing fourth in the opening round (14.37), fifth in average (29.34) and sixth in the second go (14.97). Brandi Pittman also amassed points in the event for UT Martin, as her time of 14.39 seconds in the first go was good enough for fifth place.

Both UT Martin squads return to action on April 5-7, 2018 when they travel to a rodeo hosted by the University of Arkansas-Monticello.
