Dr. Kakki Wright couldn’t have picked a better weekend for a Client Appreciation Party, an annual event at Full Circle
Equine Services on Center Hill Road in Olive Branch, Mississippi. The temperatures were perfect, around 80°F, and the moon on the weekend of October 15, 2016 was extra special: it was the weekend of the “Super Moon.” Attendance was high, with 166 people coming out to enjoy the food and camaraderie with friends and the staff and veterinarians at the clinic. Equine nutrition expert Tim Mays, from Nutrena, was on hand with lots of information and advice for feeding your horse right, and some literature, pens and cups to take home. Swanky’s Taco Shop brought their delicious “TN-Mex” taco bar – fill it yourself style with a variety of meats, cheese, veggies, plus shrimp – and mini chimichangas. Bob Boccia was the guest guitarist and singer.
Guests had an opportunity to take home any one of several raffle prizes: a Yeti cup, an equine first aid kit, or gift cards from Frontier Western Supply and Cowboy Corner. Saddles N Such donated a gift card and an elaborate wine bottle opener. Collierville Saddlery donated an exquisite riding shirt. Hall’s Feed and Seed donated a bucket chock full of horse goodies. And Ari’s Designs donated two custom-made pieces of horse-themed jewelry.
Every guest got a bucket of items to take home, including an American Pharoah poster, hoof pick, sweat scraper, curry comb, pen, and hand out sheets from Full Circle Equine on important horse health care: deworming, colic, vaccines, and caring for the older horse.
The moon view this weekend was simply spectacular! This October’s “hunter’s moon” was different from the usual full moon, which rises about 50 minutes later each day. This October moon rose just 30 minutes later,” National Geographic explained. “That offers more light overall during a 24-hour day, which came in handy for traditional hunters.” On Sunday, the moon was both full and “at its closest point to our planet as it orbits Earth,” according to NASA. At its closest point this weekend, the full moon was 222,365 miles from Earth — on average, it’s 238,855 miles away, according to National Geographic. It also “appeared 16 percent larger than average and nearly 30 percent larger than the year's smallest full moon.” This weekend kickedoff three straight months of super moons — you can catch the others on November 14 and December 14, 2016.
