Fall weather should have been arriving in time for the annual Germantown, Tennessee pleasure driving show, the Nashoba Carriage Classic, held at the Germantown Charity Horse Show Arena, on October 21-23, 2016. But summer-like weather continued to hover over the mid-south with sunny skies and very warm temperatures. The show drew 143 entries for three days of driving fun.

The weekend’s show kicked off at 5 p.m. on Friday in the Sonny Foster Arena with the first annual Driving Derby, a convoluted driving course through a variety of obstacles. Several drivers demonstrated precision driving skills, negotiating tight turns on the outside of the course. Still, there were some knockdowns and some who had trouble finding their way around the course – even with a map. The course was a challenge and took a lot of concentration, from both the driver and navigator.

The Saturday pleasure show began at 8:30 am with Turnout and Working classes in the South Ring, with Timed Obstacles going on the Sonny Foster Arena. Saturday afternoon’s classes started at 2 p.m. with Reinsmanship, while “Pick Your Route” was held in the grassy field north of the warm-up area. After Reinsmanship, it was time for Double Jeopardy! Two fun afternoon classes were the Carriage Dog Class and the Costume Class. Joanna Wilburn won the Carriage Dog class with her rescued “Memphis Street Dog.”

Sunday’s classes started at 9:00am with another new class, the Drive and Ride, followed by the exciting Gambler’s Choice. Then it was time for the relaxed Magnolia Drive through the park and around the neighborhood.
All in all, the drivers enjoyed a very pleasant weekend in lovely weather.

Susan Walker, driving Miss Meg was Champion in the Single Horse Division and won the coveted Concours d'elegance prize. Rose Marie Lawson, driving Milo, was Reserve Champion in the Single Horse Division.

Laura Shifflette, driving KT Barnabus, was Champion in the Draft Horse Division.
