Evie Tumlin hosted a Fall Horse Trials and Dressage at her Cedar Wind Farm at Oxford, MS on September 7, 2013. For the Combined Training riders, Divisions offered ranged from Green As Grass through Novice and Training Level. For Dressage only riders, USEF 2011 test from Beginner through Second level were offered. Evie is a co- DC of Southern Run Pony Club, which meets at three locations: Cedar Wind, in Oxford, MS, Showcase Equestrian Center in Eads, TN and River Run Eventing in Hernando, MS.
This is one of the most popular events in the mid-south, especially for those competing at the lower levels of Eventing. The folks at Cedar Wind do such a good job of organizing the event, shown particularly by obvious hard work and thought they put into the cross country course. Most of the course was observable from just one or two locations, and trainers were not discouraged from assisting the Green As Grass riders on the course. Indeed, it was humorous to see a Pony Club DC riding bareback on a pony over the course, encouraging and coaxing timid riders over the jumps! This, of course, would constitute an elimination at any higher level, but such training and encouragement may well keep timid riders in the sport long enough to build confidence to advance to higher levels.
The Novice and Training level courses were well designed and constituted the most work in relation to the number of entries. The design effort may pay off in encouraging riders to move up with confidence.
Competitors came from West Tennessee and North Mississippi, including West Tennessee Pony Club members Grace Read, Sarah Beth Slaughter, Sarah Bratton, Olivia Lawhorn, and Ethan Read.
Southwind Stables, Southhaven, MS, brought a large contingent of riders: Allison Gill, Daniel Patterson, Olivia Lawhorn, Katie Beninati, Abby Fowler, Sela Ward, Sarah Grace Steen, Ashley Evans, Sarah Thomas, and Emma Miller, the barn manager/trainer who competed at Training level. With the exception of Emma Miller and Olivia Lawhorn, it was the first event for these Southwind riders.
