Folks in the hunter/jumper world celebrated the Fourth of July weekend at Brownland Farm in Franklin, TN at their Mid-South Classic horse show.
Laura Linback of Woodrun Horse Farm was the winner of the Grand Prix with HH Dauphin; she was also third on Whittaker MVNZ. Kim Cox’s Twilight, ridden by Katie Cox, placed second.
Katie Cox is an up-and-coming Grand Prix star. She and Twilight had won the Grand Prix at Brownland’s previous show, the Brownland Farm Summer show June 26-30. Laura Linback and HH Dauphin had placed 4th at that show. In the spring shows of 2011 Katie clenched the 1st and 2nd place finishes in those Grands Prix as well. That was the first Grand Prix win for the now 19-year-old. Young for such a pronounced rider, she has ridden in Grand Prix classes since she was 13!
Twilight is a 12 year old Danish Warmblood gelding that Katie has had for 2 years. “In the first 8 Grands Prix we had 1 pole in each class, the 9th one we won, and the 10th one we were second,” she told Brownland Farm’s Robin Anderton.
Katie credits much of her success to “time and experience,” as she has competed at “so many shows and ridden courses designed by many course designers.”
Prior to her Grand Prix debut at age 13, Katie began riding on the A circuit when she was 9 years old. She never showed in the pony division, but, rather, started her show career on horses, and has ridden with her mom Kim Cox her entire career.
The other three important horses in her riding career, besides Twilight, have been Corazone, Bellisima, and Sacremento N. She acquired Corazone, a Dutch/Appaloosa, as a 4-year-old and showed her in the Children’s Jumpers and Junior Hunters. At age 11, her parents bought her Bellisima, her first “real” jumper. The pair moved up from the 3’6” courses to the 4’6”-5’ classes. She finished 16th individually at the 2008 Young Rider Championship.
In 2010 she acquired Sacremento N, and in 2011 rode him on the Young Rider Championship Zone 7 team, where they finished fifth. They were also the Bronze medalist team in the 2011 Prix de States JR Jumper Championships in Harrisburg.
Highlights of other placings at the show include: Woodrun’s Attention Please, who won the Low Jr/AO Jumper 1.3m, II,2c; was 2nd in the $3,000 Low Jr/AO Jumper Classic; and placed 4th in the $3,000 1.3m Jumper Stake, II,2c.
Audrey Muscari was quite successful with Jane Olsen’s Ricardo at the Classic. Ricardo placed first, third, and fifth in the Children’s Jumper 1.1m, II, 2c classes; she placed 6th in the Platinum Performance/USEF Show Jumping Talent Search.
Chris Richards and Foxtrot Echo won the $1500 Washington/NAL Child/Adult Jumper Classic. Katie Ramsey was second on Dartfield, and Audrey Muscari was third on Ricardo.
David Wright won the 1.2m Jumper classic on Zorba.
Emma Lemke won the Paige Farms Small/Medium Pony Classic on Lakeview Laddie and placed third on her Champlain Serenade.
