The 68th Tippah County Fair got off to a great start August 4, 2012 with the Ranch Rodeo that showcased ten teams of our grittiest cowboys. Fair officials stated that 793 more people attended that night than did last year on the first Saturday of the fair.
The Third Annual Ranch Rodeo consisted of teams competing in four events that simulate the work that a cowboy might do in a day’s work. This rodeo differs from the ones on Friday and Saturday at the fair. Cowboys coming from Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama were eager to showcase their ranch skills. They competed in mugging, branding, wild cow milking, and trailer loading. With a prize purse of over $6500, belt buckles, and a ton of feed, the cowboys were determined to win while putting on a show for the large crowd.
Taking top honors of the night with a total time of 5 minutes, 24 seconds was the 01 Ranch/Childs Cattle Co. This group of cowboys includes Joey Childs from Ripley, MS, Jaye Forsythe from Gadsden, TN, and Roger Clendenin and Tommy Pettitt, both from Paris, TN.
Second place went to Eli’s Team from Senatobia, MS, including Mike Crockett, David McDonald, Neil Freeman, and Clint Townsend. Their total time was 5 minutes, 53 seconds.
Third place was taken all the way to Waterloo, AL by Pen Hookers. Team members Tommy Butler, Danny Richardson, Justin Willcocks and Blake Haithcoat posted a total time of 6 minutes, 28 seconds.
At the end of the night, an anonymous group of judges chosen from the crowd gave the Top Hand and Top Horse Award. These awards are given to the Hand that is always in the action and makes the greatest effort to do his best each second he was on the dirt. Cody Patterson from Nettleton, MS took home Top Hand honors. The top horse award is chosen based on the horse’s workability and relationship with rider. Top Horse was awarded to “Wilywood,” the nine year old Buckskin Quarter Horse ridden by Joey Childs of Ripley, MS.
