Memphis native and horse enthusiast Lauren Pigford has been painting since she was old enough to hold a paintbrush. So when the Germantown Charity Horse Show asked her to submit paintings to be considered as the Cover Artist for the 64th annual show in June, Pigford immediately started putting ideas together. Her oil painting “Morning Call” was selected and featured on the cover of the GCHS program and was auctioned off the closing night of the show.
Pigford has naturally painted with watercolors, acrylics and oils since she was a child. She had a double major in Journalism and Art at the University of Mississippi. During her time at Ole Miss she focused on graphic design classes and studied print journalism and design earning an emphasis in Magazine Layout Design from the Journalism school. While living in Oxford Pigford began selling her paintings in several Yoknapatawpha Art Council exhibitions and shows, and in galleries on the Oxford Square.
After graduating college Pigford found little time to paint so she began her portrait photography business in quest for some “creative outlet” as she calls it.
When the Germantown Charity Horse Show asked Pigford to submit paintings she was hesitant at first because she had not painted in over 4 years.
“It was definitely a challenge to sit down and attempt to paint after being so out of shape. I was nervous my hand wasn’t going to work like it used to, and I was scared to death that I may have lost all of my ability to draw and paint,” Pigford recalls. But she definitely has not!
Pigford loves to paint horses, landscapes and botanical scenes. She is a realism painter who prefers to paint with oil. She finds her inspirations from nature, her horses, and Kimberlin Farms where she keeps her 11-year-old Thoroughbred, Gage.
Pigford was honored to represent the GCHS and donate her painting to the Exchange Club of Memphis. Since the show she has made time to paint regularly and is already working on paintings for several local art festivals in 2013.
