Three’s Not A Crowd?
Third Time’s The Charm?
Threesome At the Hunt
At the January 18 Oak Grove Foxhunt, riders viewed a curious chase. PennMaryDel foxhounds Quartet and Fearless, er maybe Faulkner (they look alike), were runnng a coyote, got lost from the main pack, and started running a line on their own - opening and speaking with hearty enthusiasm.
Whipper-in Tommy Brannon watched the coyote, who was making tracks about 50 yards ahead of the hounds, go into the woods. From the music of the hounds, it was apparent that the chase moved west, circled, then moved back east, where the coyote ran in full view of the Second Field. Quartet was in hot pursuit of the coyote, when second coyote, presumably the first coyote’s mate, was observed following Quartet.
The lead coyote was then viewed crossing Blackwater Road, still followed by Quartet, with the second coyote presumably making the crossing, too. After that, riders lost visual contact with the threesome.
Meanwhile, the main pack were running another coyote to the north, but never did meet the threesome or the main pack until the hunt was over. When Master Dickie Watson called in hounds, all came in, having duly earned their Kibble.
