The Three Phase Event is for all breeds of gaited horses and non-jumping trot horses. The initial focus of the Three Phase Event was on the gaited horse, which has a four beat gait at the intermediate speed, while other horses trot.  This is an equine versatility event for seasoned trail, eventing and show horses to demonstrate their versatility in dressage, a stadium obstacle course, and a 3 to 10 mile cross country trail course, which demands stamina and willingness to meet field challenges. There are three divisions: Beginner Novice, Novice and Training Level, with each level divided into Youth ages 12 to 17 and Adults 18 and above. Helmets are required in all phases of the event.

The sixth annual National Gaited Horse Versatility event will be held again at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, 3501 Lexington Road , Harrodsburg , Kentucky  on May 19-20, 2012. The event is host to such breeds as: Mountain Pleasure, Rocky Mountain, Kentucky Mountain, the McCurdy Plantation, the Tennessee Walking Horse, the gaited Arabian, the American Saddlebred, Thoroughbred cross, and Paso Fino cross.
