SENATOBIA, Miss. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo teams were each responsible for top-five performances at the rodeo hosted by Northwest Mississippi Community College April 21-23, 2016.
The UT Martin men’s team came in third place with 580 points while the women’s squad piled up 130 points, which tied for fifth in the team standings. West Alabama (690 points) and Arkansas-Monticello (295 points) claimed the men’s and women’s titles, respectively.
Tanner Phipps established himself as the top cowboy in bareback riding, as he finished first in average (153) and in the opening round (79) while placing second in the short go (74). Also tallying points for UT Martin was Coy Lutz and Houston Herbert. Lutz finished third in average (140), third in the first round (71) and fourth in the second round (69). Herbert’s score of 70 in the short go ranked third while his 137 average split fifth and his 67 first round score placed fifth.
Three UT Martin cowboys accumulated points in calf roping, paced by Slade Bronson. He finished second across the board, tallying a 9.9 time in the first round and a 9.8 time in the short go for a 19.7 average. Robbie Van Holten also secured points in all three phases, finishing third in the opening round (10.2), fifth in average (23.2) and sixth in the short go (13.0).
Micayla Gray picked up points in goat tying, finishing second in the short go with a time of 7.8. She also split fourth with a 16.1 average.
In team roping, Ben Walker and Douglas Rich registered points for UT Martin. The duo came in fourth place in both the average (24.7), the short go (11.9) while placing sixth in the opening round (12.8).
Three cowgirls notched points for UT Martin in barrel racing. Nealey Dalton claimed first-place accolades in average (29.41) and in the short go (14.49) while finishing sixth in the opening round (14.92). Macy Randolph placed third in the first round (14.77) while also coming in fifth in average (29.91) and sixth in the second round (15.14). Raegan Taylor also earned points in average, splitting sixth with a time of 30.15.
UT Martin concludes the regular season April 28-30, 2016 when it travels to Texarkana, Ark. for a rodeo hosted by Cossatot Community College.
