Just ten miles from downtown Jackson, TN is a boarding and training farm that has the best of the old with the best of the new: J&G Stables. The main barns and arenas that date to the 1940s have the best of older barn designs that provide natural ventilation to keep the animals cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. They also are made of materials such as heavy oak that are hard to find these days. Recent renovations offer updated amenities such as a climate controlled tack room, boarders and owners lounge, washer and dryer, four heated hot and cold water wash racks and grooming stalls. There is a pest spray system and fly control using Spalding Labs fly predators. Runoff grading, 10” gutters and new roofing keep the inside of the barns high and dry.
The 60’ X 14’ indoor arena with new footing forms the center of the main barn, surrounded by 12’ X 12’ box stalls with a red clay base under the bedding. There are few oversized foaling stalls and a separate area for stallions. Lighting and electrical wiring have been updated with non-glare lights installed. This is the only fully enclosed arena in Jackson area! A 40’ walled round pen attached to the main barn is also lighted and enclosed.
Pasture renovations include new white PVC fencing. Locally grown Bermuda hay is provided in off-the- ground feeders to supplement the pasture turnout. Electric hot walkers are located behind the main barn near the round pen. Genie Stewart’s, one of the owners of J&G stable, sport is eventing, so a practice cross country course is construction, using natural materials and the pasture pond.
A lot of effort was put into making the lighted 120’ X 240’ outdoor arena and footing absolutely the best. Lee Watson of Watson and Son Landscaping, the arena contractor, said they spent about 40 hours working on the footing. They had to remove some fencing to access and scoop out the existing footing. They installed high-grade limestone for a base, grading it and wet rolling it with a crown so that rainwater filters through the 4” leveled sand mixture footing and drains off underneath. Lee said he sifted and tested many samples of local river sand before he found just the right texture. Since J&G stables has boarders from several horse disciplines, the all-weather footing meets the needs for barrel racers, jumpers, Walking Horses, dressage and reining.
Judy Thomas, a retired nurse with many years of horse experience, lives on site, providing 24 hour care and security. Joan Charles of Finish Flag Farms provides training for eventers.
