With sleet and snow
The Skymont Endurance Ride, held November 6, 2010 near Altamont TN and managed by Troy Nelson, DVM, was a true test of endurance. With sleet and snow on Friday and temperatures in the 20's, the 50-Milers and Limited Distance (25 miles) riders kept moving just to keep warm. The first loop was mostly "technical:" dodging trees and climbing rocky hills on hiking trails through the winding woods of Skymont Scout Reservation. The second loop followed camp roads and power lines with minimal trail challenges, although riders really had to watch the marking ribbons because lots of leaves had already fallen and obscured the trails. The sun finally came out at lunch time when the leading 25 Milers were finishing.
Knoxville veterinarian Melissa Hamilton won first on her Arabian. Memphis foxhunter Tamara Shipley came in second with her Thoroughbred. Jana Smith, an Oak Grove Hunt Club, member finished sixth and had the high vet score for Limited Distance. Other riders included: Anne Liddell, Jennifer Whittaker, Monica Rawson, Shef Worboys, Karen Dely, Terry and Jack Price, Jim Gauge, Carl Schultz, Velvet Schults, and Claire Reddit.
