Old Farm Stone Recycled Building Material By Nancy Brannon Ever think about having a stone barn, but can’t afford the materials n or there’s no stone in the area where you live? Have no fear, Old Farm Stone is here! It is a brand new product, developed and patented by Steve Pfoff of Jamestown, KY. He built a barn of his stone material specifically for display at the World equestrian Games at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. Old Farm Stone is a load-bearing cultured stone manufactured on site. “It is produced in batches, much like making a batch of cupcakes,” explained Pfoff. “We mix together all the ingredients and pour the mixture into large steel molds, as you would pour cupcake batter. We can round off the edges, or can produce a squared look. We have different styles and coloring, producing an esthetically pleasing look, which is very important to us. You can use standard wood trusses for the roof and wood decking, or you can use an all-metal truss system. The barns are tornado and fire proof.” Recycling is a major part of the stone construction. “Almost 75% to 90% of the production materials are recyclables,” Pfoff continued. “We can grind up an entire building on site and use the materials as the ingredients for our stone.” Materials recycled into the stone include: plastics, glass, steel, metal, masonry, concrete, possibly recycled tires and recycled carpet. “We re-batch these materials on the same site to produce the stone. This keeps the materials from going to a landfill. That’s the most exciting part about this process!” The stone has virtually no maintenance requirements. “Its shelf life is about 100 to 150 years,” Pfoff said. “And it can be remodeled over and over again.” To find out more about Old Farm Stone, call Steve Pfoff at (270) 585-9250.
