Youth and Yearling Mustang Challenge October at East Fork Stables in Jamestown, Tennessee In a coordinated effort between two Mikes, 14 wild yearling Mustangs arrived at Mike Archambault’s Cedar Creek Cattle Company in July, slated to participate in the Youth and Yearling Mustang Challenge, organized by Mike Branch of Flying B Horsemanship in Blaine, TN. Mike Branch works through The Mustang Heritage Foundation and BLM to place yearling Mustangs in the southeastern United States. The Youth and Yearling Mustang Challenge is the culminating event for youth ages 8-18. They compete with their wild Mustangs after having 90 days to gentle and teach their mustangs basic ground manners, such as being haltered, picking up feet, backing and standing quietly. They also teach their Mustangs to navigate various obstacles, like crossing wooden bridges, and getting used to rain coats and umbrellas. The Youth and Yearling Mustang Challenge will be held in October at East Fork Stables in Jamestown, Tennessee, and both Mikes are looking forward to seeing youth in Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia participate in the program. While ownership of the mustang is encouraged, it is not a requirement to participate in the program. Archambault is also founder of New Beginnings Youth Ranch of Clark Range, TN. The Ranch program is for troubled and at-risk youth, and the Ranch has several participants in the Challenge. The program utilizes the youth’s horsemanship skills to train an American icon n the American Mustang, and participate in the October challenge.
