The annual Dressage Pony Cup and Small Horse Championship returned to the Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois on July 19-21, 2019. Competition levels ranged from Introductory to FEI, with Musical Freestyles, Breed Awards, and a Futurity for Adult Amateurs, Juniors, Young Riders, and Open.

Kathy and Caitlyn Massey, mother daughter team from Massar Stables in Arlington, Tenn., took three ponies/small horses to the competition: Kathy’s Welsh pony North Forks Lady Zoe (Training Level), ridden by Katherine Mashbir; Caitlyn Massey and her Morgan Scandias Anthem (Training Level, Junior), as well as Cheryl Becker’s Bashkir Curly Mikato. As of July 8, Caitlyn and Scandias Anthem were placed number one in the Training Level Junior division with an average score of 65.452.

Kathy said, “It is so much fun going to this show. I spend my whole time smiling watching all the ponies! But it is also the most challenging show grounds we go to, with a road overhead and a road behind the arena.”

In Training Open, Kathy Massey’s mare North Forks Lady Zoe, ridden by Katherine Mashbir, placed second one day, fourth the next day, and was fourth overall scoring 69.655. Kathy said, “Her training has come along so well with Katherine! I wanted a competent, positive rider on her for these show grounds.”

In Training Junior, Caitlyn Massey and Scandias Anthem, a Morgan gelding, placed third the first day, but with so many upsetting distractions, Caitlyn withdrew him the next day. This is his first year in training and showing.

In First Level Junior, Caitlyn Massey was Champion on Mikato, Cheryl Becker’s Bashkir Curly, scoring an average of 68.695%.

In High Point Rider, Caitlyn and Mikato were Junior Reserve with a score of 71.000, just hundredths of a point behind the Champion Grace Henry riding Worth Every Penny, who scored 71.552.

Mikato also won the Bashkir Curly Breed Award.

Elizabeth Clifton’s rescue pony MDA Maximus, formerly of Mid-South Dressage Academy, was Reserve Champion in Introductory Junior, now owned and ridden by Nori Benck of Johnsburg, Illinois. He scored 68.969. In Training Level Junior, he scored 63.018, but did not place overall.
