4-H News Area 4-H clubs participate in Region and State 4-H Shows Germantown 4-H Twenty riders from the Germantown 4-H Club went to the Western Region 4-H Horse Show in Martin, TN June 4-6 and 14 of those riders qualified to go to the State 4-H Show in Shelbyville, TN June 21-26. The 4-H riders are coached by Beanie Cone at Hunters Edge Stables southeast of Memphis, TN. The riders competed at both shows in a variety of disciplines: dressage, showmanship, halter, hunt seat equitation and equitation over fences, working hunter over fences, handy hunter, and trail. Some ride Western disciplines, some ride Saddlebreds, and some ride hunters and jumpers. All are from Shelby County, TN. At the State Show, most classes were divided according to age group: Junior riders, 4-5th graders; Junior High riders, 6-8th graders; and Senior High, 9-12th graders. However, some classes were not, like halter classes. Top awards were given for riders with the most points. Micala Preston was the top point rider in the Junior High group. Bowers Cone was Reserve in the Junior High group. Ashley Owen placed second in Senior High; Sarah Sutton placed fifth in Senior High, and Mary Caldwell Labry was third overall in the Junior division. Beanie fully expects all the riders who went to State to qualify for the Regional Show to be held in Clemson, SC July 26 n August 1. Top riders from the 13 states in the Southeast region will go to compete in all disciplines, and Beanie’s kids will compete against many who specialize in particular disciplines. “Last year we had six riders who went to Regional competition and all were in the top ten!” Beanie said. He hopes his riders will do exceedingly well this year. Germantown 4-H meets the second and fourth Tuesdays at Hunters Edge Stables, 5366 Forest Hill-Irene Road. Visit the website at: http://www.huntersedgestables.com/ State 4-H Show Winner Winston Edgin of Reagan, TN recently competed at the Tennessee 4-H State Horse Show in Shelbyville, TN held June 21-26, and won two championship titles. He placed first in Halter Mares 5 and under, showing AC Cool Illusion. Special thanks to McDaniel Quarter Horses in Yuma, TN for producing this outstanding mare. Winston also placed first in Jr. Pony Barrels with his quarter horse mare "Tootsie." Tipton County 4-H By Jo Kirchoff Eleven members of the Tipton County 4-H Horse Club attended the Western Region 4-H Horse Show in Martin, TN on June 4-6. Together they achieved 32 placings! Tipton County 4-H members who competed were: Melissa Holsapfel, Allison Grimming, Lauren Crow, Julie Crow, Carrie Ross, Katie Hardin, Meaghan Brino, Kathryn Jordan, Lauren Ward, Ellie Rast, and Hannah Craig. Six members of the Tipton County 4-H progressed to compete at the State 4-H Horse Show in Shelbyville, TN on June 21-26. These six participants earned six placings! Competitors at the State Show were: Melissa Holsapfel, Allison Grimming, Lauren Crow, Carrie Ross, and Katie Hardin. Club members participated in a variety of events at both shows, including: barrels, poles, flag race, showmanship, horsemanship, western pleasure, pony pleasure, ranch riding, gaited pleasure, walking/racking equitation, trail class, and hunter classes. The members will celebrate their wins and experiences at an August pool party. Youth Ranch Sorting The first ever 4-H All Youth Ranch Sorting was held in Pulaski, Tennessee and was a multi-county event with five counties participating. The event was hosted by the Lewis County 4-H Livestock and Horse Club and was sponsored by Farm Credit Services of Lawrenceburg. First Place winners received a Custom Montana Silversmiths belt buckle. Second place winners received a trophy, third place winners received a plaque and the fourth place winners received gift certificates.
