Jackson, MS - February 22, 2021. For the first time in its 56 year history, The Dixie National Quarter Horse Show did not take place this year. Mississippi Quarter Horse Association President Brooks Derryberry stated, “The committee took a long hard look at the projected weather, and out of respect and concern for our exhibitors, our vendors, spectators and staff, we felt that safety was much more important. Safe travel to and from the Jackson, Mississippi area, along with adequate necessities upon arrival were in question, so without adding unforeseen risk, it was decided it was in the best interest of everyone concerned to cancel the show. Hindsight shows the decision was the correct one as temperatures dropped into the teens, and the area was covered in ice and snow for several days.
The show cancellation notice went out on February 13. That’s when ice moved into the area along with sub-freezing temperatures. The weather continued snowy and icy, with temperatures dropping into the teens with more snow coming in Monday and Tuesday, the day the show was to start. Weather was not any better on Wednesday (2/17) with more freezing rain and then ice on Thursday. Temperatures rebounded a bit on Friday, but low temperatures were still in the 20s.
The only portion that was able to be held was the Mary Hopkins Memorial Dixie National Equestrians with Disabilities Show on February 9 & 10, one week before the big storm. The show offered four sets of AQHA, four sets of PBHA and four sets of NSBA points with large classes and huge smiles. And as in the past, the show was offered completely free to exhibitors. We were very fortunate again this year to have volunteer judges, ring stewards, announcer, show manager, and the vast number of volunteers behind the scenes to carry on allowing this event free to exhibitors. The Mississippi Quarter Horse YOUTH Association pays for all entry fees to the associations involved.
Dixie National Committee wishes to thank our 2021 Major Sponsors: Mac Haik Dealerships, Puckett Rents, MS Ag & John Deere, Southern Provisions, US 96, Outback, Elite Custom Saddles, Ladd’s Canton, Mississippi Farm Bureau, C Spire and Jackson Convention & Visitors Bureau, our sponsors/contributors, class sponsors, the volunteers who were all lined up for the show.
