Oak Grove Hunt Club Sponsors “Mock Fox Hunt” October 7, Collierville, Tennessee Under sunny skies on Oct. 7 the Delta Blues Pony Club attended a “Mock Fox Hunt” sponsored by Oak Grove Hunt Club at Misty Meadows Farm in Collierville, Tenn. In order to introduce young riders to the world of fox hunting, the mounted riders followed a popcorn trail - to imitate the scent that the hounds would follow if a fox or coyote had been in the area. Although no hounds were used, Huntsman Dickie Watson brought some young hounds for the pony clubbers to admire - the hounds were happy with all the attention they received! With the assistance of a few Oak Grove members, a few riders struck out as the “hounds” and the rest of the “field” followed. After a good chase over hill and dale, down dusty ditches and through wooded trails - an inanimate fox was found looking down from a tree. The pony clubbers received an idea of the sport and what fun it can be. Those who participated in the ride were Evan Henking, Wilson Helmhout, Devlin Smith, MaryMac Jones, Hannah Chanin, Kayla Pavlick, Hadley Hiner, Lori Niemi, Sara Niemi and Robyn Miller. A few members of Oak Grove Hunt - Betty Haser, Marilyn Hiner, Barbara Henking and Leigh Keegan presented a short synopsis back at the barn on the sport of Fox hunting and then refreshments were served. Oak Grove will sponsor a Pony Club Hunt on Oct. 20 and have invited Delta Blues and West Tennessee Pony Clubs to participate in an actual hunt with hounds and members of Oak Grove. United States Pony Clubs were formed initially by fox hunters to foster young riders and to enhance their equestrian abilities, as well as their knowledge of horse care. Anyone interested in membership to Oak Grove Hunt call Betty Haser (901) 359-1217, for Delta Blues Pony Club Jim Hivner at (901) 387-1703, and for West Tennessee Pony Club call Mrs. Meyers (901) 757-9859.
