Half-Century Of Laughter Earns Lecile Harris Place In Hall Of Fame
Professional cowboying honors the lifetime contributions of 70-year old Collierville, Tennessee resident Lecile Harris when the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colorado, includes him in its list of inductees on July 14, 2007.
Most particpants in a rodeo emerge from the chute grim-faced, trying desperately to hold on until the buzzer sounds. More than fifty years ago, Harris broke out into the arena as a rodeo clown, armed with a handful of props, a painted-on face, and a talent for making the audience laugh. But even at 70 years old, the entertainer isn't even close to the final buzzer. He continues to perform at well over 100 rodeos all across the nation every year, and has said he has no intention of the induction to the Hall of Fame be some sort of grand finale. Harris, who substitutes comedy for the sometimes-tense situations that can occur during a rodeo and keeps the crowds attentive between events, has been named Clown of the Year by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association four times during his lengthy career. He says he is still developing new acts and routines which he plans to use in the future. His award is in the "Specialty Act" category.
Sammi Snow, events coordinator for the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, is quoted as saying Harris was selected for the honor because of his "...devotion to rodeo, his service to rodeo, the type of act he has brought to rodeo, but just mainly his acheivement with the sport of rodeo."
Others being named to the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame this year include Bud Munroe - Saddle Bronc, Michael Gaughan - Notables, Joe Glenn - Team Roping, Ronnie Rossen - Bull Riding, Jim Davis - Steer Roping, Dr. Doug Corey - Notables, Dorothy Apodaca - Contract Personnel, and Skoal's Pacific Bell - Stock (Bull).
