Nashoba Carriage Classic celebrated its 16th annual show at the Germantown Charity Horse Show grounds, Germantown, TN, on October 23-25, 2015. Four-time National Champion and International driver Muffy Seaton was the judge and Ed Young, a foxhunter turned world-class driving expert, was the Technical Delegate.
The show began at noon on Friday with dressage and cones for the Arena Driving Trial (ADT), which is a short form of three day eventing in the carriage world called Combined Driving Event (CDE). Drivers returned on Friday “pizza night” for the obstacle driving portion of the ADT. Two obstacles were set up at each end of the arena for the horses and ponies to speed through in a prescribed order. They were judged on time and accuracy, and awards were given to the ADT participants with the best combined score in all three phases.
Saturday was the Pleasure Show with ring classes for Single Pony, Single Horse, Multiples, VSEs, and Draft Divisionsin turn-out, reinsmanship, and working classes. On Saturday evening were some Nashoba favorites: the Carriage Dog class, the Carriage Kids class, and a marvelous Costume Class. Participants enjoyed a delicious dinner on the show grounds afterwards.
In spite of the steady rain, a dozen drivers turned out for the Sunday Magnolia Drive, which is a cross country pleasure drive around the park areas of Germantown.
Junior Drivers
This year’s Nashoba Carriage Classic had one of the largest Junior Divisions of any driving show in the US. This is quite a feat for a local, annual show as there are monthly shows in other areas that do not have this type of Junior participation. Nashoba is so proud of their junior drivers!
Maria Roberts, age 16, showed her pony Rollingwoods Cookie Time in several classes. Maria and “Cookie” won the Junior High Point award in the pleasure show in only their second year of driving. Cookie was Maria’s hunter pony and then moved to driving pony last year when Maria aged out the small pony division. Thus, there is a second career for the pony that is no longer being shown as a riding pony.
Mary Frances Mangum, age 13, showed Simon, owned by Norma Roddy, and her sister, Charlotte Mangum, age 11 – the youngest driver – showed Macarena (aka Macki), owed by Lisa Seaburg. Both Simon and Macki got driving training this spring from Joanna Wilburn, and the Mangum sisters did an excellent job in debuting both at their very first show. Not only were these young drivers responsible for making sure the horses had an enjoyable and educational first show, they had to do it with the owners sitting in the stands watching them. Talk about pressure!
Annabel Cheney, age 15, drove Flying Diamond Twist and Trot (aka Twister) owed by Wanda Chancellor. Twister has only missed one show since the Nashoba Carriage Classic started 16 years ago. Showing a “tried and true” show pony is full of pressure, especially since everyone knows Twister and his capabilities. Annabel had only driven four times prior the show, but she received her fair share of good ribbons. Annabel also received the $100 bonus prize in the Costume Class.
Natalie Hanisco, age 12, drove Spur Run Chantilly Lace (aka Tilly), also owned by Lisa Seaburg. They had been driving some this summer, but really became a “pair” when they spent a week in Lexington, KY at the National Driving Convention, driving the trails and obstacles used in the 2010 World Equestrian Four in Hand Championship. That experience sealed their driving relationship! Natalie and Tilly were Reserve Champions in the Junior Division.
Julia Hunsberger, age16, drove Fifi, a Miniature Horse owned by Ann Kimberlin. Julia has done all of the driving training on Fifi (including some amusing tricks). Fifi had a bit of colic during a class; Julia was aware of Fifi’s problem and asked to be excused. Joanna Wilburn allowed her to drive Rollingwoods Back in Black for the next class. “We pulled him from the stall and she went in with no warm up and did an excellent job! With her attitude of responsibility for taking care of her pony and her aptitude of being able to take a different pony from stall to class, the Judge awarded her the very coveted Sportsmanship Award donated by Driving Digest, a national driving publication.
All of the transporting, prepping, and showing by these Junior drivers was made possible by financial and family support from Ann Kimberlin, Cecil and Carla Roberts, Lisa Seaburg, Norma Roddy, Dennis and Claudia Mangum, DVM, Tim and Mindy Hanisco, and Rollingwoods Farm (Ruth Wilburn, DVM, Joanna Wilburn and Sally Ross Davis). With support like this, these Juniors have a great start to their driving careers!
