Kennedy, owner of Kennedy’s Walking Horse Farm of Clarksville, Tennessee and his 15 year old daughter, Katie Kennedy, recently purchased a rare purebred Grant Zebra from one of the nation’s largest exotic animal auctions, which is located in Macon, Missouri. The Kennedy’s have developed a new breeding program in which they plan to breed the zebra to Tennessee Walking Horses. The offspring is known as a Zorse. The Kennedy’s want to get the striped bodies with a Tennessee Walking Horse gait, which will make the animals very unique and valuable in the exotic animal world. Kennedy says the possiblities for creative color and gait characteristics are endless. The distinctive stripe pattern is cherished and sought after over the world. The gentle disposition of the Tennessee Walking Horse is likewise renowned. The stronger the stripe color contrast, the more rare and the more valuable. The male zebra that was purchased is named Zeus, and his future plans are to be used in exhibitions, parades and breeding. They picked Zeus because of his exemplary comformation, picture perfect striping and gentle nature. The Kennedy’s also plan to breed the zebra to saddle ponies. The offspring is known as a Zony. The Kennedy’s were some of the first breeders of spotted Tennessee Walking Horses in Tennessee. Later, their popularity exploded in the industry. The Kennedy Walking Horse Farm has been breeding horses in the same location for 107 years. Kevin said it was a significant capital investment to purchase the zebra. He believes that the novelty will generate enthusiasm and excitement. Kevin relied on a Bible verse he uses in business that says, “He who sows sparingly shall reap sparingly, but he who sows plentifully shall reap plentifully.”
